With the crap that Vista is, I'd rather get a Mac at this point, but if you want to save the money, a new PC should do you fine. I don't recommend HPs however; my friends with them have run into many problems with them. Personally, I love Toshiba laptops. I've never had a problem with mine.

However, if you're looking for a computer with a better operating system, Leopard is far far better than Vista. If you get a PC, I'd even recommend downgrading to XP. My friends with Macs don't have too many problems, however, I'd get the Mac versions of Word, Excel, etc rather than iWork cause you might have some document transfer issues if you use it for projects and presentations.

Ok, done rambling about computers.

yeah, I have a Toshiba right now, and every spring it's fans stop working, overheats, and won't stay on for longer than 5 minutes, and since my warranty is out, it's SO not worth it to get it fixed anymore. It has some issues. Apparently this is a major problem with Toshibas, as I know other people who have them where the same thing happened (and a friend of mine's motherboard totally crashed. BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!!!) Dad says hopefully this won't happen this Spring, but I'm not holding my breath... and I'm not keen on HP ones either, but Dad keeps saying they're way better than they used to be, but Katie is having issues with hers but it's not the computer but some weird virus thing. Either way I don't think I'll be 100% happy with anything I'm going to get, but have a feeling a MacBook may be better than a PC... but since I have to over-research everything I do (especially when it costs more than $1000) I want advice ( ... )

They're going to run most programs about the same. I'd say Macs have a slight edge when it comes to graphics and PCs have an edge as far as computing data goes. I'd get the Mac, as long as you can adjust to using them and can afford it. Of course, they have their own problems, usually interfacing with Windows based programs, but that's getting better. You also have to be sure to get anti-virus. Everyone used to say that Macs didn't get viruses, but that's mostly because so few people had them, viruses weren't written for them. However, with their increasing popularity, that's changing and many hackers have found Macs easy to get into because people assume their Mac is safe.

PS. That sucks about your Toshiba. That's actually the problem my friends have with their HPs. I've got the Qosmio version, which is meant for running games/media, so it's possible it has a better cooling system than other Toshibas.

I think that fan problem with the toshibas was a temporary manufacturing glitch, unfortunately timed to coincide with the exact time you and I both got our toshibas, haha. I hear they've fixed it though. I have a dell, I like it. But I also love macs, esp if you can have microsoft office apps on them. Sharon's right about them being better for creative things. You pretty much have to have a mac if you want to do photo editing, or journal layouts, or film or music editing, or graphic design...things like that. PC's are good for words and numbers. But most importantly, the macs are SO PRETTY!
