Memory Flaws

It truly has been a long time since I've visited Midgar. So long that I cannot even recall its proper name. Mithgar... A chuckling sigh. It's as if the city and all my years there were no more than a fairy story shrouded in mists of my own making. Perhaps they were...or perhaps I simply don't want to remember. Three years...three years that ( Read more... )

Green eyes. Cat eyes. A well-known smirk. Flashes of pain. "Don't worry, Cloud." Emptiness. Solitude. Pain. Green cat eyes. "Don't worry."

Cloud sat up in bed, panting. Sweat dripped down his face. He brought a trembling hand to his head. These damned incessant dreams. Why did they continue to plague him? Why could he not just be rid of him once and for all? He was so weary of it. He was beginning to think he would never take back his life. Not that it was much to speak of. It was a half-life at best, and he knew it. Nothing was complete without him, no matter what he tried. "Curse it all." He growled. A pair of green eyes flashed in his mind's eye. He closed his eyes, a deep sigh escaping his lips. He couldn't stop the remnants of his dream from returning. Don't worry, Cloud. Don't worry.

Sephiroth sighed as he breathed in the scent of the city, this asphault and concrete haven of men. He knew why he'd come back, why he was once again determined to suffer the world created and maintained by Shinra. A vivid image of earnest blue eyes permeated his mind. Cloud, the word whispered across the surface of his mind. Why had he left Cloud? Everyone else, yes. None of them could understand, none of them knew what hell he'd been through. But Cloud...Cloud had been through many of the same things. Cloud was a kindred spirit.

He'd been selfish to leave. People had depended on him, Cloud had depended on him. But he couldn't stand the thought of SOLDIER anymore, could not abide the touch of the knowledge of what was done to those men and women who served Shinra Corporation, much less lead the army as its General. But that didn't mean he should have left Cloud like that, without a word of explanation or any way to keep in contact with him ( ... )

The rough, semi-crumbled pavement scraped against the bottom of his boots as Cloud walked aimlessly. He had to get out of that room, away from the smothering dreams, if only for awhile. Sometimes it seemed like he was possessed, and when that happened, he only found relief in one place. Her place. Cloud's thoughts turned to Aerith. She would know what to do. She always did. If she were here... Cloud let out a sigh. No use following those thoughts. They wouldn't serve him at all.

The church loomed up in the distance, and while Cloud saw it as a sort of safe haven, he was also hesitant to enter its doors. So many memories in there. His mistakes, his failures, entombed forever within its stone walls. The aroma of lillies filled his senses as he approached, bringing a thin mist of tears to his eyes. And once again he was overwhelmed by a severe sense of loss and strangling guilt. I'm sorry. Then, there was something else, something... more. Something Cloud couldn't quite place. But familiar all the same. He slowed his steps ( ... )

Sephiroth's breath caught in his throat as he turned to face that solemn voice. His eyes swept over the blond vision before him. The man had changed. His features were etched with grief and guilt and an irreparable sorrow. Cloud had grown up, far too quickly. Swallowing his own pain and guilt, Sephiroth murmured, "Cloud. It's been a long time."
