Apparently the story is that two lovers in the heavens had neglected their duties in favor of spending time together, so the lady's father separated them by a river of stars. She pleaded for a chance to see her lover, and her father relented that on this day every year, if she was diligent in her work, she would be allowed, but he neglected to rebuild the bridge; the magpies heard her weeping and offered to make a bridge of their wings every year so they could be together. [And sometimes, you hear things that are actually useful from the NPC's and keeping ears open.]

[Fun fact: It's actually part of how a kimono or yukata is traditionally worn for a girl to be a little curve-concealing! :D Because some styles apparently just have to make trolling easier.]
