This kind of thing is one good reason I don't own a telly

I’m off to a friend’s with a bottle of wine to watch The Apprentice, as another friend volunteered to be on the show. What the fuck? Who’d want to be on a reality TV show that’s some kind of shrine to the worst of capitalism? Ho hum; here’s hoping she manages to maintain some semblance of self-respect.

the apprentice, tv, foxy

She's in the UK version, which is a rather tired, low-key version of the American show, with The Boss being some famous wide-boy, bully who I believe is considered to sail rather close to the wind professionally. In the first episode they all go down the local Hackney market and sell fruit and veg. If you're ever back in Britain, it's worth a trip to Ridley Road market: it's like travelling through some space warp straight into West Africa.

Oh, my friend is able to hold her own - possibly because she's not as desperate as some in there. However, she doesn't last long in the show. In the first episode the 'girls' team used their sexuality to get free produce to sell and that didn't go down well. I imagine she was quite tainted with that incidence - she's very good at getting men 'on-side' (a trait of hers I can be a little uneasy about sometimes). It was funny watching as I went to a lawyer friend who'd never normally watch that shit and she was all surprised, as The Boss's professional assistant was an ex-partner from her law firm. We couldn't understand why anyone would choose to watch it, let alone be on it.

Assuming my circumstances haven't changed, you'll be most welcome to crash on my living-room floor for a couple of weeks while you find you feet and settle in. If you're planning to be here for any length of time and will be looking to rent, the standard contract is for sixth months and you'll need THREE months worth of rent available to put down (one months rent in advance and two months deposit is now standard, as people used to never pay their last month's rent, meaning landlords had no deposit). There are less formal things available, where you'll be a 'lodger' with less commitment on both side. To get an idea of cost, look in Loot where many people advertise, or this online site some friends have used. There's apparently also still the remnants of squat scene in East London with lots of Spanish and south Americans and artists, but I have the impression it can get quite exhausting living with the (personal) politics of such lifestyles after a while. In terms of areas to live in, East London is quite young and lively and still ( ... )
