Aspartame Inquiry

Hello All,

I just got this email from my mom regarding the dangers of Aspartame. Normally I go about researching these emails and quickly find they haven't got two legs to stand on but this time, it's not the same. I actually have found a book title in which the author tells her story regarding the affects of aspartame poisoning:

Joel has read the papers about how aspertame breaks down. It DOES break down into formaldehyde and other very nasty things. I can't give you more info on what that actually DOES to you, but, it's certainly not something I'd want to drink. Additionally, it breaks down faster at higher temperatures -- any soda containing asperatame NEEDS to be refridgerated & certainly shouldn't hang around very long. Don't drink diet soda that's been hanging out in your hot car, particularly.

I do know a few people who've had allergy-like problems with it. I don't think anything has been conclusively proven either way.

Thanks for the info. I was talking about this more with Mom and she told me that Uncle Vic has warned her repeatedly to stay away from the stuff because it's akin to drinking a slow acting poison. I take his comment seriously as he's a doctor. Talk about scarey. It worries me for Timothy's folks as they drink it a lot and one is diabetic, the other borderline diabetic.

::shakes head:: How silly that this is a problem when using sugar or natural substitutes of it wouldn't be that hard.

I know. I'd be curious to try Stevia. I've heard that it does taste a little odd, but, that there are no proven side-effects.

Obviously, if you're diabetic, you're going to want to stay away from sugar *but* substituting in poison is just stupid.
