Gokudera Hayato remembered the first time that Tsuna had to kill. That day was a rainy day in Italy, the three of them fighting someone that was trying to kill the Ninth. That day, was the day that it all started…the day the young boss-in-training was going to prove his worth to the family, but most of all, it was the day that Tsuna really lost himself for the first time.
It was like a movie that constantly played in his head, now that he was older. It was a rainy summer day in Venice, and the Guardians (minus Lambo) with their boss were there to learn about some of Vongola history. Tsuna also had to meet with the Ninth, who was starting to slowly give the family over. Since that time, when they went to the future, Tsuna had really stepped up to the plate, but being so young was the problem. The family was skeptical because an 18-year-old had never been boss of the Vongola.
More over, a 15 year old had never gone through the trial either…
Either way, when the Ninth was almost killed by an assassin, that day, the brunet was the first person to go out and find the guy. Even Reborn was impressed by Tsuna’s initiative and the only thing that Gokudera and Yamamoto could do was follow. Sure, it was reckless when they heard the news but their boss wasted no time in giving out orders. It was probably presumptuous, but Iemitsu seemed to glow with pride when his son sent the order to find who injured the ninth and contain him.
Gokudera and Yamamoto left with Tsuna to go see what they would do, despite the wishes of the family. The smallest of the three wasn’t the type to sit back when someone he cared about was hurt, and really, the two had never seen him so angry. They found him, Tsuna somehow figuring it out by a single look. They fought this one man, but this assassin was giving them so much trouble…he wasn’t going after the Ninth for no reason, after all.
Tsuna’s Vongola ring hit his chest as he was kicked into the far wall and he held his shoulder.
“TENTH!!” Gokudera said, concerned. Tsuna could hear the bombs go off and felt a presence next to him. Opening his eyes, he saw Yamamoto, brown eyes full of concern. However, the brunet looked beyond the swordsman to see Gokudera standing in front of them, bent over. Tsuna’s orange eyes widened and before Yamamoto understood what happened, his friend was getting up. The ring ignited with the Sky Flame; as Gokudera fell to his knees, Tsuna was rearing back into position and it didn’t take Yamamoto more then a second to realize what was going to happen next.
Grabbing Gokudera close, Yamamoto noticed his companion holding his side tightly. The silver haired boy gave him a half smile, saying this was nothing. It apparent that he got stabbed…looking up to make sure Tsuna was okay, Yamamoto’s eyes went wide.
There Tsuna was, standing over a crumpled mess that was the assassin, no longer in dying will mode. He was shaking, and Gokudera sat up as best he could.
“Tenth…”
Tsuna felt tears come to his eyes, as he was about to make sure this guy really wasn’t dead, but a familiar hand was over his eyes, blocking his vision.
“Reborn…” Tsuna said; his voice almost painful to hear. Yamamoto helped Gokudera up as the medical team showed up. The brunet was shaking as Reborn pulled him away roughly, the taller man holding his gun at his side. The two Guardians could only follow with their eyes as they met up with Tsuna’s father, who wrapped his arms around his son and let him cry away from the family.
“He’s really…” said one of the medical workers to another, “Not fit to be a mafia boss…”
Gokudera would have protested, but seeing his boss like this, part of him…reluctantly agreed.

Days later, they thought he would be better, but he wasn’t. Gokudera and the Ninth were released from the hospital, so Yamamoto went to tell Tsuna, but couldn’t find him anywhere. Asking Reborn, the teenager couldn’t believe that Tsuna would go off somewhere alone. When he passed the restroom (one of the many) in the hide out, he heard sobs. Back tracking, he cracked open the door silently to see the water running and small hands under the water.
Opening the door, dark brown eyes turned up, red from crying. Yamamoto walked up as Tsuna continued his furious scrubbing, like he was possessed. He looked like he was a middle school kid all over again…
“Tsuna…what..?” Yamamoto said, but his eyes widened when he heard the furious whispering.
“Gotta…get it out…” He said, in clear Japanese (he’d been used to hearing Tsuna speak in broken up Italian by now), “Out…”
Yamamoto suddenly turned the water off, forcefully grabbing the other and pulling him in his arms. The black haired teen said nothing, just holding Tsuna as tight as he could, swallowing hard so that he wouldn’t tear up at the sight of his friend. The brunet wrapped his arms around the other, grasping on to the back of his shirt and letting out a terrible cry before breaking down into tears again.
“W-W-What if he had a family?!” Tsuna said, loudly, his voice echoing on the walls, “I-I know he hurt the Ninth, and he hurt Gokudera….but…that doesn’t justify me….me…what….I….”
Words dissolved into tears, Yamamoto just held him calmly, letting him cry it out.

Gokudera sat up in bed with many books in front of him. Across from him on the bed was Tsuna, blankly staring at his own book. The Storm Guardian was charged with teach the brunet Italian, and a lot of it Tsuna picked up purely on instinct. It was impressive that someone who couldn’t do basic math problems sometimes could grasp basic Italian in what seemed like days. Gokudera was repeating phrases to him and the brunet was mumbling them back.
“Sono il decimo capo di Vongola,” Gokudera said and Tsuna repeated. The boy looked up at him with tired, sad eyes. The brown orbs glanced to the side that was stabbed, welling up with tears.
“Duole?,” Tsuna asked quietly. Gokudera frowned, wondering if his injury was what was bothering the Tenth. Iemitsu asked him to rest, so that he wasn’t worrying about that too, as he was so upset about the man who was dead. Naturally, the family was treating Tsuna like a hero, for killing the man who tried to kill the Ninth, but Tsuna didn’t see it that way.
“Fa non, decimo.”
Gokudera saw him put his hands up to his eyes, rubbing them. Closing the book, the sliver haired boy patted the space beside him, and Tsuna almost mechanically started saying things in Italian, just staring at him.
“Mi chiamo Tsunayoshi Sawada. Ho 18 anni ed il Decimo Capo di Vongola… Sono...sono….”
Tears leaked out of tired eyes and Gokudera moved gently to the boy, wrapping his strong arms around him. The boy cried, continually yelling ‘killer’ in Italian, hitting Gokudera in the chest. The bomber couldn’t say that it didn’t hurt, but Tsuna needed this, he needed to let it out…He didn’t want Tsuna to turn out like him. The young boss needed to stay sweet and gentle.
“È giusto. ..Tsuna…”

It wasn’t until both of them sat with Tsuna that he really started to be himself again. They were having a private dinner with the brunet, who hadn’t eaten all week. Iemitsu told them that maybe if they both ate with him this time that he might touch his food. Sadly, that was not the case, even when the cook fixed them traditional Japanese food.
It was quiet, and Gokudera and Yamamoto didn’t want to see their friend like this anymore. It was painful to watch, but also a tad frustrating. Tsuna couldn’t see the good things about what he did, even now, focusing on the negative aspects of it all. Finally, when Gokudera became irritated enough with the silence (and Yamamoto’s glances of ‘no you say something’) he stood up and walked to Tsuna, kneeling to him.
“Thank you, Tenth, for saving my life…”
Tsuna looked over to him in shock, shaking his head. Yamamoto got up calmly and stood behind him placing his hands on small shoulders, rubbing them gently.
“Thank you, Tsuna, for saving both our lives….” Yamamoto said gently. Brown eyes turned up to him, and for what seemed the millionth time, filled up with tears. Jumping up from his chair he hurried to Gokudera’s arms and pulling Yamamoto with him. The three of them sat on the floor, smiling and Tsuna crying, continually saying thank you and that he loved them so much.
The only thing the two could do was smile.

“And THEN,” Lambo said, waving his cow plush over his head, “There was this huge boom, Tsuna! It was SO COOL!!”
Tsuna smiled and pet the child’s wavy hair, the eight year old running off to talk to I-pin, who was shyly standing away from the group. They had all finally come back home, and apparently, Lambo had seen some movie at home(he didn’t want to leave Mama all alone, he said, but really he would be terribly upset if he left Tsuna’s mom, even to go see his own parents). Putting his hands in his pockets, he watched from afar as the members of his family talked and enjoyed themselves in the airport terminal. He felt two people walk up beside him.
“It’s good to be home…” He said, smiling warmly at the two before he hurried over to Kyoko and Haru, who had a welcome home basket for him. Tsuna was laughing easily and smiling again. By request, the brunet asked that what happened in Italy remain a secret between the Guardians (aside from Lambo), and they all agreed.
Gokudera smiled to Yamamoto, though, despite all that, and the other smiled back.
“It’s good to have Tsuna back…” They both said, walking over when they were smiled at again. This time, Tsuna protected them, but it was up to them to protect their boss…
To protect that smile…
