I went to Matt's lecture last Thursday. It was all kinds of interesting and compared biomedicine (aka western medicine) to traditional medicine (homeopathy and herbalists.) I'm not against traditional medicine. Far from it. However, when it comes to something serious like cancer or HIV, I say go for the biomeds. The problem is mostly that these folks don't tell the western doctors when they're on traditional meds, which can cause a lot of complications with the biomeds. Besides, the traditional healers aren't always safe about what they're doing or the information they pass along. We're talking about a country where the president actually said that he was safe from HIV because he showered after he had sex with prostitutes....but that might have been South Africa.
