She sat in front of the television, completely rapt while the rest of the family drifted in and out of the room at intervals. The broadcast of the March on Washsimton was unlike anything she’d seen before. As she listened to the words of Dr. King, she couldn’t help but see the truth in them. It wasn’t fair that some people were treated differently simply because they happened to be born with a different color skin. She fervently wished that she would live to see a world where his vision would be realized.
“Still watching the March, dear?” Alice said as she came back into the room.
“Yes. Dr. King is such a great orator. I can’t help but listen to him.”
“That he is.”
“I want to help bring Dr. King’s dream to life.”
“I think we all do, Peggy.”
“No, I mean I want to do something to help. Maybe between high school and college I can go south and help register voters or something.”
“Peggy, that’s very noble of you. But you need to know that the South is a very volatile place right now, and I’m not sure I like the idea of you headed that way because of that. Maybe you can find a way a little closer to home that you can help?”
“I suppose,” Peggy conceded. “I have a feeling that there’s plenty of work to be done everywhere.”
