Veronica Thorne slammed her locker shut; it wasn’t ‘ladylike’ to do so, but the darned thing wouldn’t stay shut otherwise.  She’d spoken to all of her teachers about it, but a locker door that wouldn’t shut just wasn’t high on anyone’s priority list.

Since it was her lunch period, she headed down towards the cafeteria.  Before she could get there, a hand reached out, grabbed her arm, and pulled her down the hallway towards the gymnasium.

“Margie, you’re hurting me,” she whined.

“Too bad.  I need your help, or Doug’s going to get suspended.”

Veronica rolled her eyes.  “What did he do now?”

“He and Franklin are having it out again.  Underneath the bleachers in the gym.  If Doug gets caught in another fight…”

Marjorie didn’t need to finish that sentence.  Doug was skating on thin ice when it came to school; in between his barely passing grades he was constantly getting into physical altercations with his classmates.  The last time he’d been called into the principal’s office, Doug had gotten his final warning: one more fight, and he was done.

Veronica and Marjorie slipped into the gym.  They could hear Doug’s voice, hissing insults at his twin.  Veronica, ever the peacemaker, marched up to Doug, who had his brother pinned the wall with a forearm to the throat.

“Douglas, let him down now.  Whatever it is, you can finish it at home.  Or at least after school.  I mean it.  You’re three months away from graduating; don’t throw that away.”

Doug hesitated, but released his brother.  Franklin gasped in a few breaths.

“Why shouldn’t I rat you out?” he asked between breaths.

“Because he’s your brother, for better or worse,” Veronica retorted.  “Leave it, Franklin, or go whine to Mom.  But keep school out of it.  Please.”

Franklin made a face, but nodded.  “Fine.  Just stay out of my way until graduation.”

“Fine by me,” Doug spat.

The two boys stormed off in opposite directions, leaving Veronica and Marjorie alone.

“Sorry to interrupt your lunch,” Marjorie finally said.  “Can I get you a soda to make up for it.”

“Nah,” Veronica said.  “I’ve somehow lost my appetite.”
