That was pretty awesome. My favorite shot is when she's rounding the clubhouse turn, cleanly ahead by a couple of lengths, and from the low angle alone the track, there's this wall of stallions behind her. And I'm like, there's a metaphor.
Prior to the race, I'm thinking, OK, Mine That Bird is a fluke, and without Borel, he won't finish in the money. And "Ride the Rail" Borel from the 13th position is going to screw up his horse's run trying to get to the rail. So I'm looking for Pioneerof The Nile this time.
And I could not have been more wrong, or more excited and happy with that race. What an awesome show!
Nah, Borel wouldn't have messed with Rachel. =) The rail might be his preferred ride, but with a horse who likes to be on or near the lead from the 13 hole, the rail was never an option. Boy did Big Drama try to mess with her by taking her so wide, but he got his in the end. hee.
I was pretty certain MTB was not a fluke. His turn of foot was too damn quick, and his splits for the final furlong too incredible to be a fluke. The rail ride clearly made a difference, but there wasn't any horse who had anywhere close to the acceleration he showed, and he did the same thing in the Preakness. I'm so proud of him! Don't know what happened to Pioneerof the Nile.
