Amazing to me that people in the South continue to vote against their financial and life interests and focus instead on social issues like gay marriage and abortion. Meanwhile, the health and education of this region falls further and further behind Ecuador, Russia and Macedonia.

I had to read this a couple of times to make sure I was really getting this. I'm not surprised to find out that the South lags behind other states but it's eye-opening to see in very clear statistics that we lag behind other so-called developing nations.
