I wish that someone who understands these things better than I do would lay out our post-dodgeball options with what they do, because I am confused. The only one I've looked at really is Brightkite, and it seems to be missing what I think are the two most useful functions of dodgeball--the groups, and the ability to send a message to everyone. How ( Read more... )

I'm not sure how well twitter would work for that, though, because people use it so much that I had to stop sending it to my phone because too many messages. All I want on my telephone are messages pertaining to fun times.

yes, plus I have twitter friends who are not in Seattle. I don't want to tell then where I am (mostly because I don't want that information from them either).

I think that Brightkite has a crippled shout-out functionality called "SAY", but I think you already need to be checked in for it tow work.

Apparently they are "considering" improving it:

Microsoft had an inferior dodgeball-like service at SXSW the year we all discovered it. I'm trying to find out if it's still lying around unused somewhere.

But there's probably a group-texting service out there that doesn't cost money. I'll look around.

I would be totally willing to pay dollars for something that was as easy and simple and friendly as dodgeball. But that might just be me.

Wonder when 4square will be up. Brightkite doesn't seem awful, just needs more users and a few features.

Shit, just basic texting is painful on my jankytown phone. I'm out of luck if everyone switches to a fancy-phone platform, at least until my contract expires. Britekite never clicked with me...it seems confusing. Maybe I need a carrier pigeon...or will have to call people like olden tymes.

well, this dodgeball only makes sense if you're the barhopping in a big(ish) city sort in a very small section of people.
