2008 in review

Jan 01, 2009 11:31

I did this meme after 2004, after 2005, after 2006 and after 2007. Asking the same questions each year is a good way to show how my life has changed - or hasn't.

1. What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before?
Worked in retail. Performed on the Flynn stage.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Last year's: 1) to aggressively pursue opportunities to further my acting career, 2) to practice my voice lessons at least once between lessons, 3) to be more physically active and improve my dance skills.

1 & 2 were not much kept. 3 was kept very well!

For the coming year: Get out of debt (as much as possible) by saving more and spending less.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.

5. What countries did you visit?
None.

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
More money (or, at least, less debt). Really meaty acting opportunities.

7. What date from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
November 4! Election day. My 8-year anniversary with Adam. And my first day of work to set up the M.A.C. store.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
The shows I was in (especially all the dancing I did in A Chorus Line) and getting a job with M.A.C.!

9. What was your biggest failure/disappointment?
At the time: All the jobs I applied for and didn't get.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
A really bad sore throat in January (I think). Other than that, not really.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Makeup! Lots and lots of makeup!

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Adam (and Mom, Kevin and Becca) for being so supportive.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Our jerk of a vet. Religious conservatives and everybody who voted for Prop. 8.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Mortgage, natch.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
I've found that when I'm really, really, really excited (in a surprised, happy way), I literally bounce up and down like a little kid. I did that twice in 2008: When I got cast as Grace in Annie and when I got hired at M.A.C.

Additionally, I got excited about my two other shows and the two shows I saw on Broadway.

16. What song will always remind you of 2008?
Anything from Annie, 1776 or A Chorus Line.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? happier!
ii. thinner or fatter? thinner
iii. richer or poorer? poorer

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
I'm not sure. Maybe creative stuff (painting, etc.) and developing professional audition materials.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
In hindsight: Doing "assignments" (aka free work) for jobs I had I applied for.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
I worked Christmas Eve. Then Adam and I went out for Chinese food. On Christmas Day, I called my family, and Adam and I went over to Jeff and Aimee's house for dinner with his parents.

21. How did you spend New Year's?
Working until 6:30. Then hanging out with friends at our house, eating and playing Pictionary Telephone. (The people there were: Andrew, Lara, Aimee, Jeff, Aaron, Becca, Holly, Christa, Sarah, Greg and Toni.)

22. Did you fall in love in 2008?
No.

23. How many one-night stands?
None. I hate this question. It's so pointless for me.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
Pushing Daisies or So You Think You Can Dance.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Nah. I've met some new people that I'm not very fond of, though.

26. What was the best book you read?
Stella Adler's The Art of Acting

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
[title of show] or In The Heights

28. What did you want and get?
Roles in musicals. A job with M.A.C.

29. What did you want and not get?
Many other jobs. In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't get them!

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
The Visitor

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 31. I had a shared birthday party with Andrew, and we had karaoke. On my actual birthday, I had rehearsal for A Chorus Line

32. What one thing that would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Getting to see Madison and Ella.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
More makeup, better executed makeup with bolder colors.

34. What kept you sane?
Phone calls with my mother.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Barack Obama, I guess.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The election in general.

37. Whom did you miss?
Madison and Ella. I missed them so much. Looking back, not seeing them was the worst thing about 2008. :(

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I'm not sure. I really became fond of the whole Springer-Miller family through Annie. Or maybe some of the people I work with.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008.
Wait, and things will reveal themselves. But while you're waiting, start taking action.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
"I really need this job. Please, God, I need this job." - both because of the more than nine months of job-searching and because I was in A Chorus Line.
