Harry Potter's Confusing Me!

So I'm playing around with some of my ideas for Harry Potter and I realized there's something I don't really get. How is it that Hogwarts is supposed to be the only wizarding school in the entire British Isles? What happens to children who are not accepted to Hogwarts? Remember Neville mentioned in PS that his family were worried he wasn't magic ( Read more... )

I just figured they wouldn't get any magical education if they were squibs. Although I saw a beautiful headcanon post on tumblr about a squib girl conning her way into Hogwarts and using sleight of hand tricks and help from her magical friends to keep up the charade. It still weirds me out that some of the more essential muggle knowledge doesn't get taught there. There doesn't seem to be much of any scientific progress in the magic world, which is just such a waste of power when you come down to it.

I wasn't thinking of squibs, through. Just thinking the amount of wizards in the world doesn't seem to fit the idea of their being only 11 wizarding schools. I would think there would be some lesser schools of magic in Britain in addition to Hogwarts, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Apparently, there's a story, I think on Pottermore about a pureblood squib getting up to Hogwarts and getting rejected by the Sorting Hat. Look up the Buchanan family.

I guess you're right, they don't seem to have a use for science, literature or other topics. I wonder what they'll be like, having someone combine Muggle knowledge with wizarding knowledge, at least in regards to science? Or maybe Rowling's thought process is that two don't really mix. Remember Arthur's experiment with stitches in OOTP? So wizards are left to create magical equivalent or don't use it at all.
