So... sometimes I get asked why I speak whatever is on my mind... I'd just like to say now, that this is the logic I am working with day-to-day in Southern Illinois:
Hi! This was a great post, I'm going to share that picture with a friend of mine who is from Southern Illinois.
I wanted to reply to your comment over on deaf_gay but it wouldn't let me. When I said that the sign for "straight" as in heterosexual is the same as the sign for "blunt," I wasn't saying you should call it a "blunt" family. There are signs in ASL which look identical to other signs but mean different things. Often the surrounding grammar and context clarify which sign it is. Just because the sign for "straight" LOOKS like the sign for "blunt" doesn't mean you'd be SAYING blunt. I was just using that picture as a reference for what the sign looks like.
I understand the grammar and context rules... I simply prefer an alternative sign than that which appears the same as "blunt" (regardless of the meaning). I want a different concept; the sign "gay" has it's own, the sign "hetero" should as well.
Thanks for the compliments on the pic :) and the time for clarifying your meaning. ~peace and love
I probably should have just said it's the sign for "drive straight ahead" - oh well! I did see a girl use a sign for straight yesterday that I didn't recognize, but I didn't catch enough of it to pass it on - I saw handshape and movement but not orientation or location. ;)
I showed the picture to my friend...and she said she knows that place! Small world...or at least small southern Illinois!
