I first heard "this too shall pass" from Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five
I thought about getting it as a tattoo. As the most helpful truism in times of trouble/pain. But the irony of it permanently on my skin confuses the message perhaps.
It's been used by lots of people. I like this expansion:
This too, shall pass. When things are bad, remember: It won’t always be this way. Take one day at a time. When things are good, remember: It won’t always be this way. Enjoy every great moment. -Doe Zantamata

The tattoo idea never occured to me, but I did think of getting it engraved in a ring (which is apparently part of the original story).
