From his tent located at the center of town, Sokka had been venturing out more and more every day. He'd seen a couple people, but for the most part, it seemed the place was deserted and devoid of any real rhyme or reason

It seems Lovino and Sokka's personalities are closer than they've assumed so far.
Yes, Sokka did warn him about doing stupid things alone and yes, Lovi is terrified, but he can't very well say he's not curious.
"...Oh Hell no." Lovino walks up from behind Sokka, "What the Hell are you doing here?" he's noticed the machete and is prepared to whip out his very scary and lethal white flag if needed.
Secretly, yay. Now they can do stupid things together.
Sokka recognizes the voice, but glances behind him to make sure, anyway. "Lovino," he greets, and then turns his attention back to the looming pillar. "I thought I'd do a little traveling."
He's thought long and hard about it and just hanging around the city isn't cutting it for him. By nature, Sokka doesn't want fed; Sokka wants to hunt. Hunt what? It doesn't really matter -- even adventure can be prey.
Clearing his throat, he gestures toward the pillar with his machete. "The pillar of this community seems to be the key." Of course, he's completely unaware of his play on words.

"...Traveling? Through a pillar?" Lovino rolls his eyes, "You're more messed-up than England." Because Lovino was of course here for a completely different reason. Haha.
"Whatever that implies," Sokka replies. He steps forward and eyes the pillar suspiciously. He's seen strange things in his life, and just about all of them have revolved around spirits, but this doesn't feel quite the same.
As he inspects more, he rubs at his chin with his spare hand. "Don't you feel like there's some... power here? It almost hums. Like a machine."
