Best and Worst Shape of My Life

We visited the orthopedist again earlier this week to talk about my back. 9 months on from my re-herniation and I'm growing tired of it. The last time it took somewhere 9-12 months to subside (though I don't think it fully went away). It's hard for me to remember a time when my back/leg didn't hurt, or when I was free to run, jump or do all sorts ( Read more... )

I remember feeling the same way as you and getting on a bit of a bicycling kick back when I first moved to Utah. I was all excited about Rails to Trails and I investigated destination cycling tours. I love being on a bike. It is demanding, but relaxing at the same time. The breeze, the air, blood pumping, it is all good. Not that I do much now with three kids to haul... When Jared first started working at DHI we bought a good bike for him and he'd also bike to and from work daily (of course, that is only a paltry mile and a half-- not much compared to what you do), but he finally put his bike to rest after having to fix flats literally every other day. Those darn thorns.

Good job on your weight loss too! That is a tough thing. Glad you are having fun!

Wow, I didn't realize that you had thorns that bad in Utah! I've heard about them in Arizona and elsewhere in the southwest, but that sounds like no fun. I've only flatted twice so far, but I can understand the frustration. If he wanted to get back into it though, it could well be worth it to invest in a good pair of Armadillo tires that are supposed to be very good at withstanding thorns and other punctures.

I agree. When I was living in Boise we also had thorns. I got some great tires and never had a problem again!
