Free or Inexpensive Good Web Hosting with FTP?

I was wondering if any of you guys could recommend a good web host that's either free or relatively inexpensive that supports FTP and allows ads (ie Google Adsense) without having invasive ads from the host. I don't need a ton of space or bandwidth. I'd really like to have the website's name .com, though, and the FTP and ad support. I'm having ( Read more... )

I found a free .tk, but I'd prefer .com for it being easier to remember. I feel overwhelmed by the number of places you can buy hosting and domains from, though. The particular domain doesn't go anywhere when I try to type it in, so I have no clue who owns it or who could lease it to me or however that works.

This is something they never covered in any of my web design classes, so I'm as lost as a 'net newbie on AOL. XD

TK domains involve a pop-up ad on your index page (it's not a real, ICANN-accepted domain extention anyway). I hatehatehate those with a passion!

If you want to find out if a domain is owned, you need to do a whois on it.

For domain registration, I'm a fan of Network Solutions. They've good good security, they're licensced by ICANN to do "privacied" domains (which is why when you look up mine, for example, it doesn't show my personal email, home address, or phone number) and they also do hosting packages. I've never tried their hosting, but they've got a deal right now where you get hosting at $7.47/mo. and the domain comes free.

I strongly advise against GoDaddy. That's the same domain registrar Keith had all of his domains stolen from. They SUCK for security.
