So, my first official Dreamwidth post! This site is actually really nice to work with. I've joined a few communities (they are pretty sparse right now, but I think once DW has implemented their community import feature, that will start to change) and friended a few people who have migrated or who have been here all along ( Read more... )

Did Dreamwidth appear to compete with Livejournal or something? They look remarkably similar :/

Dreamwidth is based on the same code as Livejournal. There were quite a few sites like that around the time that Livejournal came to be, and some survived while others didn't. Livejournal became popular and was eventually bought up by various companies who changed the model from what Dreamwidth currently has (site is supported by the money collected by users who pay to blog but still allows free users if they are given codes by paid users to sign up) to what Livejournal currently has (site still collects money from paid users but is primarily supported by companies who pay to put their ads all over the free users' blogs ( ... )
