Why are we so tied to our writing?

My writing group is meeting tonight and I'm nervous again. Sometimes I have confidence, but usually I'm just trying to prepare myself for the hopefully gently stated "this sucks". It's usually phrased like "You can do better than this". But deep down it means the same thing right? The only good thing about it is that they seem to believe that
