The Piers Anthony one was the Incarnations of Immortality series.
I read the whole series, bout the only ones I liked were On A Pale Horse (death) and For Love Of Evil (evil) the worst of a wierd series was Bearing An Hourglass (time)

I love the idea of the series, but couldn't stand reading the rest. They're going to be making a trip to the local used bookstore before long.
