Oh my GOD. When you mentioned on Childfree it was 'just me and my toad' I thought, what does she mean by that...and you meant literally. This is so wild. When I was a kid, I went swimming at this pool that was located right next to a creek. Well, they had a lot of little toads there. I ended up taking two home. One accidently escaped from the aquarium thing he was in, and I mourned the loss of that toad. The other one died. Some months later, my dad was watering the yard and well...the toad that I thought I had lost was hopping out from under some damp bushes. It was about the same size as your toad there. I kept him for a while but released him back into the yard, and sometimes at night I could have sworn I heard him chirruping out there.
I'll never know how large that little toad might have grown since he died when he was only about an inch or so ( maybe a little larger) big. But that other one...he must have been gobbling up all the insects and everything. I put him in a pail and took him into the house and he hopped out all over the house. My mother was so mad when she saw all that mud and everything. But after a few weeks I did let him go. Of course, I have no idea if it was a male or female, but I named him Marvin after Marvin the Martian from Warner Bros. And the other little one was just called Toad LOL

Usually you can sex most toads by whether they chirp if you pick them up-- males chirp, females don't. Markings aren't always a way to tell because Yael has lots of spots on her throat and belly, which are often considered marks of male toads. They reminded me of an inverted baby deer pattern, hence her name since "yael" means "deer" in Hebrew

My baby is still a bit skittish. She likes being an only toad though, and having me spoil her!
