5.9 Earthquake

Aug 23, 2011 14:52

I was scared. I kind of just laughed through the whole thing out of pure nerves.

The epicenter was just northwest of Richmond, Virgina, where I live, and my whole apartment was trembling.

We never, I mean never get earthquakes like this on the east coast. Not to sound like a crybaby, since thankfully there wasn't much damage and I haven't heard of ( Read more... )

Earthquakes will alway be unsettling regardless if the area your in is known for them or not. It's just how they are.

The last time there was a decently sized earthquake here in Southern California, a lot of cell services and phone services fell out due to an over abundance of people trying to get into contact with everyone else. It lasted only a few seconds for some but several hours for others.

Hopefully you get your service back soon. Glad to know you're okay.

It was my first one that I could really feel, eep!

Oh wow, CA. You must be much more used to earthquakes there? I'm sure the building codes are probably better too.

But yes the loss of phone service was distressing as I was trying to call my parents and friends. (one who was stuck at Union Station)

Ah yes, but phone service came back within the hour so it's all good. Thank you!

I'm sorry, not more used to them. I mean, they are much more frequent, right?

Lol, no not really. We're get them occasionally, but usually we don't even feel them 'cause they're so low on the Richter scale. The last nasty one we had was in 1994, so....we're about due for another one XD. We had a small one a few years ago, a few months after we got our new puppy, and she was outside when the shaking started. She ran her little butt up the stairs of the porch and I practically carried her inside and into the hall way. We sat there until the shaking stopped, and when it was done she kept looking at me with a 'Why was the ground shaking Mommy?' look.

We also have a 60 gallon fish tank in the living room, and my dad called as soon as cell and house phone services were back up to check on me, and then tank lol. Don't want imagine what that mess is going to be if we get hit with a nasty one.

Thank you, Chii! It was really just shaking. There are some pretty funny captioned pictures of DC where lawn chairs fell over. But still pretty scary to feel that for the first time.

Now just preparing for the hurricane this weekend eep! But it's not expected to cause severe damage. Nature just doesn't like us right now. ^^;;;

I slept soundly through the whole thing! This must mean ignorance really is bliss. xD

Anyway, glad all is well!
