Well actually the origins of Halloween come from All Hollows Eve and that was a day to respect the dead.

Samhain you say? I believe I've read something about that before. A holiday, I believe years ago people celebrated it around this time.

I suppose at this day and age the harvest for most people is metephorical.

I've never heard of All Hallows Eve, but that sounds reasonably close to our holiday.

Years ago? I wonder how that's possible, for Tortall to exist in the present and yet celebrate something that's fair old.

It doesn't seem like there's that much grain ready to be threshed in Mayfield, does it?

It used to be called that, I think.

Really? It seems this Halloween comes from a lot of things.

I'm sure it did, but I think in my world at least it originated in the festival of Samhain and another religious holiday.

Then it's just a holiday mesh, then. I suppose that makes sense.

Um, like, no. Samhain is like, totally a Gaelic harvest festival and Halloween has like, roots in Samhain and All Hallow's Eve, but like, doesn't really have anything to do with it anymore. Samhain is like, usually shown as a demon now on TV.

It's not a demon at all, though. It's a festival, to celebrate the harvest and remember those who've died.

I like, totally know, but like, not everyone's a master of the occult, you know?

...what's that mean?

It's Spanish! It means Day of the Dead! It's when people respect the dead, but have a big party! So you CAN do both at the same time!

silvestris_mage October 29 2009, 13:01:23 UTC
Oh! That settles it, then. You really can do both on the same day.

I think I'd enjoy that holiday.

Well, I'm from Tortall. So I've no idea what you'd call it in this world.

"Samhain" is a holiday typically associated with Irish Celtics, so... I suppose so.

That's interesting. I've never heard of the Celtics before. But I suppose that traditions could extend between places and times.
