A babysitter is someone who takes care of children while their parents are away.

[Oh. Well that makes sense. Why didn't she think of that earlier?]

Thank you for explaining. We don't use that term at home...actually I don't think we have a word for it.

You're welcome. 'Babysitter' doesn't make much sense now that you've pointed it out. I have no idea why the name is that way.

I'm pretty sure it means you keep an eye on them. Unless they want you to be like a bird and sit on them so they stay warm?

...I don't think sitting on them would really help. Wouldn't that squish them?

Probably, I mean, getting sat on kind of sucks.

It does. I remember the time Numair sat on me, when I was a squirrel. That was...horrible.

Are you a babysitter, then? I would think it's more like a nurse--or a governess--or something of that sort!

Yes, apparently I am now. Without knowing it.

Oh! A nurse. We had those at home, they took care of children. That makes much more sense than sitting on them.

Well, sitting on them might keep them... warm?

Do you mind tending to children? It would be terrible if this was troublesome for you!

I suppose, like birds and their eggs.

I don't mind at all, though caring for them makes more sense than sitting on them certainly does.

's not a hard job. I did it all the time in high school.

What do you do, exactly?

You play Big Sis for an evening. Basically make sure the kids are cared for, eat right, and get to bed on time.

Oh. That doesn't sound too difficult at all. At least I didn't get something I'd be horrible at.

Literally sitting on babies? You can't be serious....

silvestris_mage December 14 2009, 13:17:15 UTC
I don't think it's literal, from what other people have told me. I think it's caring for children, not sitting on them.

artwithknives December 14 2009, 15:13:24 UTC
I was wondering if you'd take it literally because that'd be kinda dumb.

I didn't think I was supposed to, but given the town, I didn't know.
