gratuitous TVD venting (spoilers)
A short rant about TVD fandom that contains spoilers for the new episode but doesn't really talk about the episode at all. This isn't related to anyone on my friend's list. Just had to vent. You know how that goes.
Sometimes the internet makes me want to scream. Luckily that's what LJ is for!
People saying Elena needs to get hit with a brick? *sigh* People saying that Damon is a horrible brother who doesn't care about Stefan just because he kissed Elena. *sigh*
Open Letter To The Internet
(1) Elena is a person. Her own person. Stefan does not own her. She does not owe Stefan to use her body in a particular manner. He does not get to control or direct her sexuality. I side eye anyone who calls Elena "Stefan's girl". They broke up episodes ago. Do I belong to every ex I've ever had? NO. (Just because Damon says it, doesn't make it right. Damon is kind of an idiot about a lot of things, if you've noticed.) A character doesn't get to earn or deserve Elena.
This is not about ship preference - it goes both ways. If Elena and Damon ever do date and then she later breaks up with him and restarts a relationship with Stefan, this will not make her: [a] ungrateful, [b] a stupid bitch, [c] a slut, [d] a whore, or [e] someone who needs to get hit with a brick. That will make her someone who is dating Stefan now. The end. She will also be none of these things in the very unlikely event that she never dates Stefan again.
(2) Stefan was well aware that Damon was in love with Elena and it never halted his romantic relationship with her. He didn't stop kissing her or dating her because Damon fell in love with her. Damon may be an awful person for many reasons, but one of those reason is not him kissing Elena. The only person who is allowed to object to Damon kissing Elena is Elena. I will never accept the idea that a guy gets some special precedence and ownership by "getting to her first". You don't get to call dibs on people. It's not fucking shotgun.
(3) Could we stop classifying Damon as so much worse than Stefan? They are both fucked up vampires who have had their good and bad moments, and who have both done all kinds of horrible shit to all types of persons. It's unlikely that Damon has committed any negative act that Stefan has never gotten around to in all of his years. (If you want to discuss who's been better or worse to Elena personally, then meta to your heart's content if you avoid the other pitfalls listed above.)
