Ok guys, ready to rock and roll? This chapter is edited, fixed up some mistakes, changed some sentence structures, some minor things actually...but fear not! The new chappies will come out soon!!
Disclaimer: I do not own HnG in any way....nor do I have the skills needed for those ingenious plays shown throughout the series.
A Different Path
Ch.1
“Hikaru! C'mon Hikaru, lets play!” The said teen groaned with displeasure and tugged his covers over his head, trying his best to muffle the yells of the transparent ghost lingering near him.
“Shut up Sai, let me sleep...” Hikaru mumbled incoherently as he opened an eye sleepily. Sai pouted.
“But I haven't played Go in such a long time..wahh!” The thousand year old ghost cried. Hikaru cracked a smile at the ghost's impatient love for the game. He was already up, I mean, who couldn't be after all that ruckus? But of course, that didn't mean he had to do what Sai asked.
“Oh shut it Sai, I let you play just yesterday on the Internet remember?” Hikaru gave a sly smile. “Or are you suffering amnesia because you're old?”
Sai sputtered some nonsense before turning around and huffing.
“When you're a ghost you don't age!” He exclaimed.
Hikaru shook his head wryly and started getting off his bed and dragging some clothes out, commenting.
“They don't go around possessing ten-year olds who had no interest whatsoever in Go either.”
Sai had the decency to look sheepish at that. He hadn't really planned on it though, honestly! He was just sleeping peacefully in some wooden, dusty go board when he heard a small child giggling and poking his “bed.” Of course he'd be curious, he hadn't had a visitor in decades! So who was to blame him when he just accidentally lodged himself in the innocent child's consciousness. Besides, the one to blame was that old geezer of a grandpa. Why did he suddenly decide to have a “cleanup” then anyways?
“..ai...Sai???”
Sai broke out of his thoughts to see a fully dressed Hikaru in front of him waving his hands in front of him.
“Ahh...what did you say?”
Hikaru sighed and fought the urge to bash his head against the wall.
“I asked if you wanted to play a game on the Internet.” He repeated while opening his laptop and logging in. Sai flailed about excitedly ranting about his game then came to a sudden halt, causing Hikaru to look at him with concern.
“Sai? Is everything alright?” The black and blond haired teen asked with worry laced in his voice. Sai gave a pout.
“Of course there is! You stupid disciple. I taught you almost all my skills in the last two years, sure you're a galaxy away from me, but you hardly ever play against anyone other than me.” Sai lectured as he gave the boy a stern stare. Hikaru sighed and rubbed his temple, feeling that an incoming disaster was about to land.
“Sai, we've been over this several times already. Sure, I've learned just about everything you have, but” He stressed the last word when Sai opened his mouth to speak.
“You're the one that loves the game so much to as linger in the board for so long. I have no interest in taking that away from you.” He said with finality in his voice. Sai fell silent and turned around a bit, lost in his thoughts, while Hikaru continued messing with his computer. When he had finally logged into their Internet Go account Sai's voice spoke up.
“Fine, then I won't play either.”
Hikaru almost dropped his laptop at that. He stared at Sai with his jaw on the ground.
“What?!” He asked incredulously. “You can't be serious!”
Sai gave a “hn” and turned his head away.
“I am. I won't play unless you start playing too.”
Hikaru sighed at Sai's stubbornness.
“Sai...” The young teen started, but got cut off by a certain thousand year old ghost.
“I don't care, I won't let you waste your talent like that.” Sai said with stubbornness.
Hikaru placed on an equally stubborn expression.
“I don't! I don't have the talent Sai, you're the one that plays most of the games, you can't tell if I have the talent or not anyways.” He muttered darkly even though as much as he tried denying it, somewhere inside of him was glowing with happiness at the praise Sai gave him. Sai wasn't going to lose to his host's obstinacy though.
“Look Hikaru, yes, you haven't played much but from what you have I know you have the potential.” He said patiently.
Maybe even enough to surpass me. He thought silently as he stared at Hikaru intently. The teen was about to rip his hair out from the frustration, just what would it take for him to understand? Sai then tried a different approach.
“Then how about this?” He proposed, catching Hikaru's attention.
“One game, thats all I want. I want you” stressing the “you” part, “to play a game against someone with your own strength, then you'll see your own potential.”
Hikaru stared at Sai, searching for any trace that the spirit was lying before finally concluding that he was indeed serious. He gave a reluctant sigh before begrudgingly agreeing, besides, even though he would never admit it, somewhere inside of him wanted to see if what Sai said was true. Somewhere inside of him, the love for Go was slowly blooming, somewhere in him......

“That one!”
Hikaru looked at the building Sai had pointed to.
“A Go salon, it looks pretty neat.” He muttered to himself as he walked inside the salon with the urging of his tenant. It was too late to convince Sai to just go home and be content with playing Internet Go himself and besides, he was getting pretty excited too.
“Ano...” Hikaru started hesitantly. The woman at the counter smiled at him sweetly.
“Hello, I'm Ichikawa Harumi. Did you want to play?” She asked in a warm tone as she whipped out some forms. Hikaru fidgeted nervously and cursed Sai for doing this to him, ignoring the snickers the said ghost was giving.
“Yes....is there anyone around my age?” He asked in a hopeful tone, not wanting to play against old geezers and hear them rant about his mistakes for a good two hours. Harumi gave a slight frown for a minute, pondering about Hikaru's request.
“Well...yes...there is one but...” She said hesitantly. Hikaru's face immediately brightened. So there was a kid around his age, maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all.
“Where is he?” He asked, unable to hide his excitement. Harumi couldn't help but smile at his enthusiasm; she pointed to a green-haired teen sitting in the far back corner.
“There he is, a sixth-grader but...” She wasn't able to finish her sentence. Hikaru went towards the other teen immediately before halting and turning back with a sheepish grin.
“Sorry, how much is it?” He asked, scratching his head.
“500 yen but...” Once again she wasn't able to finish. Hikaru placed a few coins on the counter and once again walked towards the teen.
“Hey!”
The boy turned towards him with surprise as Hikaru sat down and smiled at him.
“I'm Shindo Hikaru, you?” He asked cheerfully. The other blinked for a minute before giving a small smile in return.
“Touya Akira, nice to meet you.”
Hikaru gave a small inward sigh at Sai who kept urging him to make the challenge. He shot the spirit a dirty look before turning his attention towards Akira again.
“Ah, Touya, wanna play a game?” Hikaru asked, feeling quite nervous inside. For some reason, he felt excited; he knew that Akira was strong. He never met the boy before but just being around him, the air...was somehow different. Sai nodded his head in agreement. Akira didn't hesitate a bit and accepted Hikaru's challenge.
“Would you like a handicap?” He offered.
Sai looked insulted that someone would offer his vessel a handicap. He screamed insults at the other boy causing Hikaru to wince at the level of noise his tenant was making. Akira must've seen Hikaru wince because he asked in a slightly worried tone,
“Whats wrong?” Hikaru gave a wry smile and shook his head briefly.
“Nothing, and no, I don't want a handicap.” He added in a low whisper that Akira could not hear.
He would kill me for sure if I did.
Akira shrugged and reached into his bowl to Nigiri while Hikaru did the same.
“I'm black.” Hikaru announced minutes later as they cleared the board and started playing.
“Onegaishimasu.”
“Onegaishimasu.”

Without Hikaru realizing it, a group of people had started to surround them. No, of course he wouldn't realize; he was far too engrossed in the game. Sai watched with fascination as this Touya kid dragged out a determination from Hikaru that even he failed to do.
Yes, he was right in doing this. As much as he loved playing Go, he would never be able to pick up another stone with the knowledge that he had let a great potential go to waste. No, Hikaru was different from Torajirou. Hikaru had the talent, the potential to become a great player. He could even surpass Sai himself one day, that Sai was sure of. But what Hikaru needed wasn't him or the verbal words saying that he had talent. He needed someone to push him, to make him strive, to light a fierce, never-ending determination in Hikaru. He only hoped. The thousand year old spirit only hoped that this Touya kid could do it.
Touya was strong, stronger than Hikaru right now, but Hikaru was also doing very well. And Sai could see it. He could see the small fire burning inside of Hikaru right now. Yes, he had made the right choice. Hikaru would become someone all Go players feared one day. And as long as he still existed, Sai would make sure it happened; even if it meant that he would never play a single game again. His time had long since passed, it was time to let go and let a new generation take over, because Go was forever evolving, and with the new generation, he could pass on his love of Go, he was sure of it.

“I resign.” The words were softly murmured out with regret. Hikaru's eye site started getting hazy, tears threatened to spill, but he kept strong. He gave a slight bow and then looked up at Touya, a new-found respect and envy for this boy sprung up inside of him.
“It was a good game, I never thought Go could be such fun.” Hikaru said happily, his earlier traces of regret seemed to gone, vanished into thin air. He spoke the truth too. To him, Go was just a board game old geezers played, so never did he think it could've lit such passion inside of him. During the game, Hikaru could've sworn he was like a different person. Akira was strong, really strong, Hikaru couldn't beat him now, but one day...
Wait! What am I thinking about? Sai's the one thats supposed to play, not me! He argued against himself silently, not realizing that his conflict was portrayed on his face, causing just about everyone to look at him weirdly.
Sai gave a small sigh at his host's stubbornness but also gave a small smile. It was going along just fine. Yes, Touya Akira would do, because he was the kid that managed to light up Hikaru's passion for the ancient board game. And he would do much, much more than just catch up with him. No, Hikaru would surpass him, he would surpass Touya Akira. It didn't matter who the boy was, Sai would make sure that Hikaru continued to play. Hikaru loved the game far much more than he himself realized, and Sai refused to let that love go to waste. Sai would help him, he would help Hikaru come to truth with his own feelings, because to him, Hikaru was the brother he never had.

Touya stared at the board in front of him. How did this happen? It had started like a standard game at first, they each moved to take a corner....then, all of the sudden it happened! A move he had thought to be a wrong one connected with several others, cutting straight into his territory. He had no idea what happened during the game. At first it seemed like mistakes, horrible moves even, but then....it turned into a brilliant one. One that had required him to look 20, no, 30 moves ahead. Was there seriously someone this strong out there? One that wasn't a pro? Was that even possible?! How could it be though? Did he really hide himself that well?
Nothing much could startle or surprise Touya Akira. When you had one of the best Go players in the world as your father, you learned not to be surprised at others strengths, but....Shindo Hikaru was.....different. Akira couldn't place it very well but Hikaru's every move, every attack was well-thought and placed. He didn't allow Akira's attack to get pass him, he continued striking back with full force. In fact, if the game had continued, Akira was sure it would've been a close one. The way Hikaru was now, Akira was sure he was the stronger one, but Hikaru would catch up one day. Akira knew that much at least. He didn't know why. There was a thrill inside of him. Maybe its because he hadn't played such a close game in a long time? Akira didn't know. But somewhere inside of him, there was a will being born. A feeling inside of him. And for the first time Akira felt such intensity and passion towards someone other than his father.
I refuse to lose to him!

Hikaru looked at the game in front of him again before his cellphone rang, breaking everyone out of their stupor. He looked at the phone in irritation.
“Yes? Hikaru here.” He spoke into the phone while giving an apologetic look to everyone.
“Yes....I'm coming home now...no, I stopped by a Go salon today.” Hikaru sighed in exasperation.
“Mom, I know that grandfather wants to play against me but I really don't want to play against him. The last time I played he dragged me to this tournament and literally forced me to play in it. I do not want a repeat of that.” It was then Hikaru realized there was an audience listening in to his conversation. He blushed and glared at seemingly no one.
“Look Mom, I'm busy right now. I'll be back before dinner ok? Yes...yes..now bye.” He said hurriedly and shut the phone off while apologizing to everyone.
“Sorry, it was a great game Touya-kun, thanks a lot. I have to go now.” Hikaru grabbed his stuff and stood up, just about to leave when Akira's soft voice stopped him.
“Are you an insei?” The blonde stopped and shot the other teen a bemused look.
“Ha, insei. I don't have the skills for that.” He said wistfully while walking out of the door, waving his hand goodbye.
Stunned silence was all that was left in the Go salon.
“WHAT!?!?!?!?!”
Came the startled yells. Did that brat just say he didn't have the skills? Who the hell was he kidding?! He was in a close game with Touya Akira. With Touya Akira. And he said that he didn't have the skills for an Insei?
“Is he really stupid or what?!” Kitachima exclaimed after several minutes. Harumi shook her head and sighed, looking to Akira to ask his opinion.
“I...I think he doesn't realize his own potential and skills yet.” The genius said softly.
“He doesn't seem like he's played against many people so I don't think he realize the potential he has.”
Silence, that was all that lingered in the salon after Akira's hypothesis. A genius that could very well rival Touya Akira with his skills. What else could happen in the world of Go? Or more importantly, how would they get this new talent to join when all they knew was his name and he himself didn't seem to know his own skills?
