Since we're at the point of lies and half-truths being posted about me

I guess I'll give more details so the truth gets out.

First, the technical part:

This is the National Adjudication Policy.

http://nerolarp.com/PolicyInfo/Policy%20Adjudications.htm

Literally every section was violated in the adjudication of Chris Hill's PC Kyth Wild.

One, Purpose; Adjudications are for rules violations or misinterpretations. Not only were no rules violated, but no rules have ever been claimed to be violated.

Two, Process; The intent to adjudicate in this instance came 10 MONTHS after the permanent death. Hell, just for the sake of argument, let's say I'm wrong by 50% (which I'm not), that's still 5 MONTHS after it happened and obviously considerably past the deadline of "before a character resurrects", past the end of the event, and even past the 30 day written notice mark if you really wanted to stretch the policy past all reasonable interpretation. In fact, before Chris went to resurrect, I asked him several times if he was unhappy with the death, had any desire to adjudicate, wanted to contest anything that had happened. The answer to all of that was no.

Three, Result; In a continuing disregard for the policy of adjudication, the results of it were publicly posted on at least two message boards. Today, in stunning poor taste, Chris has decided to reply to one of them and insult my plotline even more, though he's technically the player in all this so the responsibility to not post publicly isn't his by the policy, just by good manners and professionalism. But, well, that ship sailed ten months after he permed I suppose.

So, technical stuff aside, the story (since I am tired of seeing such slanted trash being posted). However, once again, the story is irrelevant to the fact that adjudication was not proper, Chris' "grounds" for adjudication boil down to "I didn't like the plotline":

I ran a plotline involving horrible monsters called Reaverborn hunting nobles of Evendarr. They would curse them if successful, to lose some of their skills (about half). It was known that a Destroy Magic formal spell would cure it, if cast within 10 minutes, resigning the title would cure it, and resurrection would cure it. Some information about them was being looked at, but they were a hard nut to crack. So an NPC came to Ravenholt called Lawrence. Lawrence, for those who never met him, was an asshole who cared about knowledge and not at all about people, but had some obligations to help Evendarr. Anyway, he told some PCs there that he had told the rulers of Evendarr that one possible way they might get more information on the Reaverborn is if he marked a noble and then that noble let themselves get cursed, particularly if they were cursed for longer than the 10 minutes for the curse to "set" and then the noble in question either resigned or resurrected. The mark would let Lawrence observe in minute detail the entire process at, to use scientific terms for this LJ post, the subatomic level.

The PCs up in Ravenholt said no.

At a later event in the METRO chapter, in Virginia, Lord Buttons (a high ranking Evendarrian noble) came to town and told a collection of nobles that the King had authorized nobles to do this if they wanted to, but did not require or recommend it. It was up to them. Literally before I could finish the sentence, Kyth and another PC Noble Sir Milo volunteered. I went on, as Buttons, to finish the disclaimers but told them that if they were willing that Lawrence would come to town after I, as Lord Buttons, had left. (I play both of them.) Kyth and Milo reaffirmed their willingness while all the other nobles at the table said they weren't willing (except one who wasn't of the correct type of noble for this, just an honorary Lord).

Anyway, I come back as Lawrence and talk to Milo and Kyth for a long time about doing this. Making sure that they wanted to do it, and laying out in explicit terms what would happen if they went through with it. Milo wanted to do it and then resign his title. Kyth wanted to get marked and then suicide to free himself. Lawrence, being an asshole, mentioned they could do both, but conceded that 99% of the information they were likely to get would come if only one of them went through with it. So the question became who. Kyth and Milo literally argued about this for some time, going back and forth and near fighting for the opportunity. I think they settled it with rock-paper-scissors if I recall correctly.

Kyth was picked. Lawrence confirmed, again, that he was ok to go through with this and he was so we proceeded. Lawrence did some wacky magic to make Kyth more likely to be attacked by Reaverborn and then took him to an isolated spot. there, Lawrence left him, I changed outfits, and played the Reaverborn that dropped him and cursed him. Having done so, I left as the Reaverborn, came back as Lawrence, and brought Kyth back to town.

Now, Kyth still had another 10 minutes to change his mind and have the DFM cast, something Lawrence reminded him of while he sat in the tavern and roleplayed being cursed with other PCs. He was steadfast and stayed cursed, and in the end the 10 minute mark passed as I marked time. Then, finally, having refused again to be cured, he went to commit suicide as a way to undo the curse, having nobly accomplished the purpose of gaining the information.

Before Chris went to the earth circle, I asked him several times if he wanted to adjudicate, if he had any problems with how things happened, if he was ok with it all. He was, he said, perfectly fine with it and there were no problems. I said ok and he went off to resurrect while I went back in game as Lawrence to give PCs information that had been discovered. Sometime later we heard that Kyth had permed. After which, I again checked to see if Chris was ok, he said he was fine that it was a clean death with no problems.

So we finished the event and moved on.

In the week following the event I IMed with Chris a bit, checking to see how he was doing. He said he was very sad, but fine, and held no ill will or issues with the death. Cool.

Then, some ten months later he apparently began asking for an adjudication. After that I had a number of conversations with Sarah Smith and a brief one with Mike Smith about what had happened as they were the two of the people deciding what to do. During these talks, I began to hear, for the first time, that Chris felt he had no choice, that I forced him into dying, that I had punished him for playing a good guy noble, etc. It was also during these conversations that Mike Smith made a comment that he didn’t care what had happened, he just wanted his friend Chris to have his character back.

These conversations would happen a couple times, then fade into background for half a year and then it would flare up again. And so on. Finally, a few days ago, Mike Smith posted the results of their decision making on the Blackstone (VALOR chapter) and Therendry (METRO-DC chapter) public message boards.

Please note that as of this writing, Susan (Chris’ wife) is suddenly concerned with people talking about this publicly and handling things through “proper channels.”

This whole thing is a sordid disgrace. Players of characters who have permanently died at VALOR are absolutely right to feel like they deserve an adjudication since the chapter owner has no qualms about a) killing and perming PCs at his chapter and b) lobbying for the rules on adjudication to be broken on his behalf. Whether they should be granted is a different story.
