There's a rap at the infirmary door an hour or so after dawn; it's Jared. "Hajene Darley?" says the young man. "We've got a problem, and Helen only just got to bed an hour ago. Could you come have a look?"

"Of course." Suzi sets the tray she was holding down and follows Jared, "What happened? Can you fill me in as we go?"

She's not hurrying, but she's not dallying either, if it was an emergency or Changeover he would zlin a lot more concerned.

"It's Meredith," says Jared. "The Mirrens' daughter. She got up this morning to milk the goats and she wasn't feeling well, but she didn't think it was worth her while to bother Helen about it. She got maybe half the goats done before the fever started, and she's damn hot to the touch now."

Suzi can go from walking to running between steps, "Where? Hurry, it could be Changeover! How long? Since the fever started? Are there any Gens around her? That could get dangerous."

She's tearing down whatever direction Jared was leading her, hand firmly on his arm and dragging him if he isn't moving fast enough for her taste.
