I just wonder what would happen if all these Xian activists actually used their energy in a positive way. Say, to combat hunger, or poverty? What Would Jeff Do? He'd join in with the yoga class. I think Jesus would too. He knows the value of staying limber.
There is a locally famous man in Santa Cruz who dances on the sidewalk of the busiest intersection for a few hours each day to the beat of his own walkman. I went up to him one day to ask him why he did what he did and he told me he was following Jesus, who was the greatest dancer of all. Then he gave me a picture of Jesus.
Having come from a fundy background, I'm not surprised. If you actually do talk about "energy" and the spiritual practice behind yoga in a public classroom, on the public dime, I even agree with them that there's a problem.
Simply teaching poses without calling it yoga or talking about chi, etc., ought to be OK, though. The bible talks about meditation, so as long as there aren't overt religious references during meditative practice, I wouldn't find this troubling, either.
I remember being taught that Smurfs were satanic. Don't read, watch movies, play games, or have anything to do with magic because it's of the devil. Can't watch Quantum Leap because it's about possession. It's easier to keep people under control if you can bring about a dark age and have everyone not question anything the church says.
