Are Greedy Teachers the Problem?

Feb 02, 2012 22:24

I think public speaking is a valuable skill that should be taught in school. As a future teacher, I hope to train my students in many areas, including public speaking. In my opinion, part of being a good speaker is taking time to do some research on your topic and learning how to process information logically ( Read more... )

Malcolm Gladwell wrote a great article on how teachers should be coached and nurtured through their learning process, the way we farm athletic teams. http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/12/15/081215fa_fact_gladwell

I think you'd enjoy reading it.

Wow, thank you. That is helpful. I plan to print it out and pass it on to one of my professors.

It often..rather irks me that (so far) in my education classes we just "watch and listen." I often think it would be so much more helpful if we could roleplay and then get feedback. But that doesn't seem to be the way we are taught.

It would help though (I think.) I guess I'll have to wait for my internship but see, the internship is make or break you. I wish we could role play and learn BEFORE we get measured and maybe dismissed.

I really appreciate you passing this article on to me. THANK YOU!!!!!

You're welcome - I love Gladwell's writing and this one's especially good!

What if you got together with some other student teachers and did some roleplay with them? Time's precious, I know, though :)

Fantastic!

I honestly think that teachers should not only be paid more but have fewer restrictions on them. Restrictions in this case being standardized testing and political crap interfering with the actual teaching. I'm silly though. I think the teachers should be allowed to do their jobs and not have to constantly jump through hoops to appease parents that are simply being difficult.

Wow, I cannot believe a senator said something so ignorant.....oh wait....yes I can.

Also, a required speech class in high school changed my life for the better!

I can, too. "Politician" often seems to be a synonym for "dangerously out of touch" these days. :/

I admire anyone who has the fortitude to stick with teaching (I decided I didn't). They make the teachers jump through all these hoops, working for peanuts at the hardest job in the world...and they tell them they can't pray? :)

Great entry!
