We used to visit the ocean once a year for our family holiday; this brought back those memories too. They were some of the happiest days fo my childhood. Now, I can't imagine living far from the ocean. Even though we're not 'beachside', we're only 20 minutes' drive from the coast, and the city we plan to move to in the next year or so is a port city... right on the southern ocean :) I can't wait!

Very evocative piece. Well done.

Wow, you're so close to the coast. I hope you get to take your kids there often.

I also hope the move works out. Perhaps there would be more jobs in that area?

We're over 300 miles from the ocean. I know it's not all that far but so far a visit doesn't fit in our budget. Maybe next year..? I guess it's nice to know it will always be there, once we can finally go back.

Try to stay cool! Maybe you can take the kids swimming sometime soon? Of course, with little ones, you really have to watch them near the water, that can be stressful.

Hard to say if there will be more jobs there - it's a smaller city, but there are going to be some mines opening up nearby so perhaps that will improve job prospects? In any case, we're not getting much luck here, so any move has got to be a positive one!

Fun fact: there's nowhere in Australia which is further than 1000 kilometres from the ocean ;)

Strangely enough, the last few days have been too hot to go to the beach - we'll have to start going again in the mornings.

I guess it's easy to write about something if it makes you twitterpated:)

Thanks for your constant kindness. I'm ever amazed by you.

Are you finally feeling better yet?

And I, you. <3 <3 <3

Feeling mostly better--just a little tired at this point, but I can probably blame that on the baby. ;) Thanks for asking!

Lovely. It reminds me of my own longing for the sea. Thanks for posting such a refreshing take on the topic.

I love the ocean! I only get to see it once a year if that. Sigh.

Well I hope you get to go soon. It's been almost 2 years for me.

If life ever gets perfect, we need to meet for a girl's weekend at the beach. Wouldn't that be fun?:)

I love all the sensory details here, how the ocean felt and how salty it was. I can almost hear it now, despite my paltry experience with it myself (only for an afternoon have I been near an ocean warm enough to swim in, and I spent that mostly trying to keep my non-swimming husband from throttling his family). And I love your obvious affection and warmth for your subject. Well done :)

Oh man, I hope you get to go back, this time without in-laws. The ocean is so sensory, it was actually difficult for me at first to describe it in words. I kept thinking phrases like "it feels amazing" which probably wouldn't work that well as a description.

And yes, I am definitely twitterpated over the sea. Someday, we will be together (I hope, LOL) My biggest dream is to one day live near the ocean. I'll probably never be able to afford a beach-side home but just to be near enough to go there now and then, every few days even? would be so amazing.

I hope there are trips to the ocean in your future!

Thanks. I've got a friend who lives by the seaside who keeps hassling me to come down (to Brighton) and visit. Maybe I'll manage it this summer :) He goes on all the time about how great it is where he lives, and I must admit I'm envious of spontaneous seaside barbecues and that sort of thing :)
