Title: "All The World's a Dollhouse"

Round and round, round and round.

I coasted down the narrow path, standing hard on my brakes when I reached the door.

When I was eleven, I thought of my bike as that pony I had always wanted, the tassels on her handles waving in the wind like a long, trailing tail.  Like any proper horse, she had a name.  Abigail ( Read more... )

I'm glad you could see it. At first I couldn't think of anything for the prompt and then I realize I kind of could think of two.

Thanks so much for your kind words!:)

It's a really moving piece, my friend. Keep this one for your writing portfolio. <3

Awww, I loved this so much! I love reading childhood memories :D I never had a real, new Barbie since they were so expensive, but I had a couple of very old hand-me-down ones and a couple of other similar sized dolls. Only one boy doll, who was very much not Ken. I tended to ignore him. XD

It was hard to know how to play with the boy dolls, wasn't it? I had dolls of all ages though, that were sized similar to my Skipper and my Mr. Sunshine so they had this massive family with teenagers, babies, toddlers, etc.

Almost all of my dolls were used too. We shopped at Thrift stores often!

Boy dolls were kind of pointless. They could wear a shirt and slacks or... a different shirt and slacks. (Mine was slightly larger so couldn't be dressed in drag, alas.) We'd always go to the second-hand store and get old Barbie clothes for mine, so they had TONS of clothes :D

I used to make up all sorts of plays with friends' dollhouses because I didn't have one of my own. My mother bought me a Sindy dollhouse when I was 12 with loads of furniture because she said she wanted to do it while the window was still open for me to play with it. Sadly, it was a little too late and although I was polite and appreciative and played with it as much as I oould, she really wasted her money that year.

Isn't it sad to get what you always wanted..after you want it?

I've realize my daughters are growing out of things. It's a little heart-rending to see the "Oh man, Sara wanted this so bad 3 years ago and here it is used and I could buy it!" and realize..she actually wouldn't want it anymore.

I didn't realize until I looked at the back of the photo that I was 11 when this happened. I know I played with doll houses a lot longer than most girls. I guess because I had younger sisters? I'm not sure. I was a..different kind of child I guess.

You had a really interesting childhood! I enjoyed this story. I played with my Barbies and GI Joes for way too long for a similar reason.
