All throughout history it has been thought that man needs a friend. I pose to you this question, Is this friend necessary for survival? Or how about an even easier question, Are friends good? Most of you would answer yes to that statement but are you really thinking about what you’re saying. I mean, come on, in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve, if God had left Adam alone and not given him a friend, there would be no such thing as original sin since the whole ordeal with the devil and the eating of the fruit from the tree of knowledge would never have occurred. With that in mind, I urge you to continue reading and hopefully you will come to the same conclusion that I have, Friends Kill.
Without friends if you wanted to consume an alcoholic beverage you have basically two choices. Either drink at your house, or drink at a bar. Since high school students are too young to drink in bars, the only option would be to drink at home. If you are drinking at home, than you would not be getting in a car to drive home, since you are already there. Therefore, by not having friends and being forced to drink at home you greatly reduce your risk of being involved in an alcohol related auto accident.
Those lunatics who choose have friends and who are forced to drive home while under the influence of alcohol, have an extremely high chance that they will be involved in an auto accident. Nearly half of all of those accidents will be fatal to either themselves or someone else involved in the accident(Yaerd, 2005). Because this person chose to have friends, and because these friends thought drinking was a right of passage, someone has ended up dead.
Another thing that teenagers seem to believe is a right of passage is the use of drugs or smoking. Teens smoke tobacco because their friends do it, therefore they think they are cool. A person with no friends would not try to impress friends since they do not have any to impress and therefore would not smoke. This mentality of impressing someone also extends to the use of drugs, therefore once again, the person with no friends would not use drugs in order to impress people.
The most common illegal drug used by teens is marijuana. Once a person becomes addicted to marijuana, they are many times more likely to move on to more addicting and dangerous drugs. This deadly pattern of drug use often leads to a dangerous downward spiral usually ending with the person overdosing on whatever drug their friends decided to use. Once again, due to peer pressure and through the use of illegal drugs, someone has died.
The most deadly topic of this entire paper is by far the influence one’s friends have on their driving. It has been proven that driving with friends distracts the driver to such an extent that often the driver will not see a light turn red, or a stop sign, or will not be paying attention when another car full of friends cuts them off. It has also been proven that a car full of teens is more likely to be driving above the speed limit and therefore the chances of a fatal auto accident are increased.
Along with poor driving habits, having friends with cars leads to racing. Illegal auto racing is such a dangerous activity that nearly all accidents that occur while racing are fatal, either to the driver or to a bystander, and in some cases both. Poor driving is another thing that would be eliminated if someone did not have friends. Without friends to distract you in the car, you are much more aware of what is going on around you. Also, if you do not have friends than there will be no one for you to race and you will be more likely to obey the speed limit.
The only thing that is worse than driving poorly with ones friends, would to be driving with friends while under the influence of either alcohol or an illegal drug. Driving under the influence reduces ones ability to react to common every day driving situations, so much so that auto accidents are more likely to occur just because the driver could not drive in a straight line. The combination of friends and alcohol while driving is such a deadly combination that the statistics are mind boggling. In 2002, out of the three thousand plus fatal auto accidents in the state of Florida, one third or just over one thousand of those were alcohol related crashes(Yaerd, 2005).
Another idiotic thing that stupid people with friends are pressured to do is stealing, weather it is shoplifting from the local gas station, or it is the armed robbery of a bank, stealing is both morally and legally wrong. The majority of thefts by teens are done either on a dare, or because of peer pressure. Therefore without friends to pressure you into stealing a candy bar or a pack of gum, and also without the possibility of impressing them with your stealing abilities, one would be far less likely to steal from a small shop. Without friends it would also be impossible to plan a large heist. It is impossible to pull off a bank robbery, or a large jewel theft without the aid of accomplices. Since nearly one hundred percent of all accomplices are friends it would be impossible to become involved in such a crime. Once again, the lunatics who have friends and who were out drinking may decide to try to rob the local 7-11. During the robbery the clerk may pull a gun and begin shooting at the would be robbers. At this point with guns blazing it becomes every man for himself and if someone is shot they are often left behind.
Violence and the mob mentality are at their worst among a group of friends. Violence amongst the group would be impossible since there are no friends, and nowadays fights are much less likely to occur one on one. Fights nowadays involve large gangs of friends on both sides ready to help out if their friend starts to loose. Therefore if you eliminate the posse of friends, only an idiot would get into a fight that is one versus ten or twenty. Mob mentality is also impossible since there would be no mob. With out a mob of people, no one in their right mind would ever loose touch with reality and begin acting out in violent ways.
When it comes to sexual activities teens would say that most teens are sexually active and than it is cool to be having sex. However once again, by not having friends you can protect yourself from this attitude because you will not desire to be cool. By remaining a virgin you reduce your chances of contracting an std by 100%. Along with virginity comes respect, this respect for the opposite sex will greatly improve ones being. Rape would also be far less likely because the majority of rapes occur between two people who already know each other. By having no friends it would be impossible to rape one of them. Knowing this most rape victims would have wished that they did not have friends at the time of their rape. Up to this point I have only discussed how having friends can be detrimental to ones life in the real world.
Unfortunately even during school having friends can bring you down. Having friends will cause your grades and learning to suffer. A smart student who wanted to do their homework or study prior to going out on the weekends would be made fun of and called names, nerd, geek, ect. Even doing homework during the week when it is assigned and studying for homework could be considered nerdy. These friends of yours want you to not study for the test and than just cheat on it to get an A. These friends will tell you that everyone is cheating, and actually doing your work is just a blatant waste of your time. As everyone knows cheating only hurts the cheater in the long run because eventually you will not be able to cheat and those skills you have not learned will one day become essential. If you do not have any friends than no one will be able to pressure you into not studying or into not doing your work and you will be able to succeed in your studies.
Most importantly having friends will often lead to depression. Having friends leads to trusting people who are not deserving of your trust. When these people betray that trust and back stab you your emotions are often damaged. The more friends one would have the more opportunities there would be for this to occur. This distrust and hate with your ex-friends if it continues long enough may lead to severe depression. Severe depression may in some cases lead to violent outburst where you may hurt one of your friends or hurt yourself. If you do not have friends and you do not place trust in any one than there is no possibility that you will be upset or taken advantage of.
If you wish to lead a healthy productive and most of all safe life than I suggest you head this warning. Friends are only your friends until they are not. Once they are not your friends they no longer care what happens to you and they will be willing to do whatever they must to succeed and become number one. Even while they are your friends be aware that they are not truly interested in your well being. Deep inside us all we each only care about protecting and caring for number one.
