Urban wilderness (pictures)

I've grown fond of having a balcony. Not just a balcony, but a balcony that overlooks something actually interestingMany a morning an unknown white bird hangs out by the lagoon, gupling fish by the dozens. For a while there was a running joke that the bird could only be seen by the pure (or perhaps impure) of heart, since I saw it several times ( Read more... )

Hmmmmm, my first thought on the bird of impurity would be a white heron, but the bill doesn't look quite long or sharp enough. It's a little hard to tell.

Someday I'll figure out if deer are highly intelligent while all other wild critters are dumb, or if it's the other way around.

While beautiful to gaze upon, deer are one thing - hungry. Don't plant lilacs. They also don't display a great deal of intelligence or street smarts when crossing the road. ;p We're just at the start of deer season here, and they are *everywhere*, including the freeways.

I think the White Bird of Impurity is an intermediate Egret. Lovely birds, deadly to fish.

It did remind me of the pictures you put up a while ago of the bird that was stalking your fish pond. Next time that I see it and am suitably dressed to do so, I'll hike down to the lagoon and get a closer shot of it.

It certainly does eat fish. The first time I saw it, it had found a seat on the edge of the water and was continuously gulping fish out of the lagoon for over an hour. Fortunately the lagoon seems to be largely populated by little more than millions of mosquito fish.

Every other living creature I've seen bolts when humanity draws near. But the deer just stand in the middle of the road, completely oblivious.

I think it's a toss up over which kind of cow makes the most noise.

MOOO!

If you haven't yet, I suggest you pick up a field guide to birds. I like Petersen's, but you should get one that you like. It's fun to try and identify the birds and field guides don't really get out of date, so one should do for the next 10-20 years.

Of course, a true birder will now come along and contradict everything I've suggested.

I was thinking just the same thing the other day. We sure got a lot of birds around here.
