"Grandpa Simon!" Simon grinned wildly as he saw three of his grandchildren come whirling around the corner of the hallway into the main living room. He closed the book he'd been "editing" (a treatise on the intricacies of White Court politics that was just wrong wrong wrong in his opinion) and set it aside. It'd keep for later. He opened his arms wide, "Hello darlings!" He greeted them with a very wide grin, "How are my three lovely ladies today?" A chorus of answers was what he got in return. He laughed merrily. "So what shall we do today, my lovelies?"

"Story time!" they demanded in unison. He grinned at them, "Well let's see, which story shall I tell you today, hmmm? I could tell you about the time that I singlehandedly stopped a vampire invasion of a small village near where I grew up...or that time when I saved the Premier's daughter from some nasty Red Court vampires." Looking at their eager and expectant faces, he changed his mind, deciding to tell them an altogether different story. He smiled softly at them, three beautiful girls who would grow up into strong and even more beautiful women. They settled in around him and he began his story. "It was a long long time ago back when there were not the modern things that make life so hopelessly complicated these days. There was a lonely old man only he didn't know he was quite so lonely. He loved his work, as tiring and difficult as it was." Sammy rested her chin on his knee and looked up at him with rapt attention. The Twins, Tatiana and Tamara were wearing similar expressions on their faces. "He was a brave wizard, who targeted the bad things that liked to feed upon innocent people. He had his work and his friends. There were those who would swear that he had more friends than the stars in the sky, but in truth it only seemed like that. He had two very close friends to him, both great wizards themselves. But still in all the midst of his busy life, he was searching for something. Something that would make him happy and would cure his loneliness. He was getting tired of always working so hard." He paused to take a sip of his tea that Carolina had brought to him. He shot her a smile as she passed him. Mmm, late fifties and his wife still had an arse that deserved sonnets upon sonnets of praise. But back to the story and the three expectant faces sitting before him.

"What happened next, Grandpa?" Tatiana wanted to know, the other two nodding too. He took another sip of tea and let it sit for a moment before continuing. "So this brave wizard has been fighting for over one hundred years and he still looks, still searches for this thing. All over the world he looks as he fights back the bad things, but still he cannot find it. Until one night." He stops to take another sip of his tea. "One night after he has fought all of the bad things that he can possibly fight for that night, he slips into a church to rest himself so that he can leave the next day for his home. He's been all around the world, some places more than once and now it's his turn to go home and rest. But the next day he doesn't go on his way home. Something inside him tells him to stay one more day, just one more. So he spends the day walking around and just admiring the simple beauty of the place. He needed more days of this, he decided, days where he just walked and took it all in. It was restful. The sound of children playing and laughing made him smile.

He'd been buying some fruit off of one of the street vendors when snatches of a hushed conversation between two of the vendors caught his ear. From the little he had heard, it sounded like he hadn't quite gotten all of the bad things the night before. It was good he had stayed then, he thought. This way he could get ALL of the bad things. So he waited until it was dark and cast out his magic senses to try and locate the bad things. But while he senses them, he also senses something else. Someone who needed his help, but he didn't have to move since she was headed straight to him. She burst into the church, scared and tired and very sad. So he did the first thing that occurred to him. He picked her up and settled her in the safest place possible as he quickly set up a nasty little magic trap for whoever was following her. He wrapped his arms around the girl and told her to stay as still as she could. The trap took care of the bad things following her so that he could take care of her. He didn't even know who she was, her name, or anything. But as he held her, he knew she was going to be important. He took her with him when he travelled back home. And suddenly he wasn't so very very lonely anymore. So the brave wizard had finally found what he had been looking for and he was happy now instead of sad." He finished the story with a smile and a little flourish. The three little girls pondered this over for a minute before Sammy piped up, "Grandpa, what happened to them? The girl and the brave wizard." Simon thought for a moment before answering her, "You can be sure that they lived happily ever after, little one." He told her even as he looked up to meet his wife's amused gaze. "And now I believe there are snacks for you three in the kitchen." As the three girls hurriedly rushed out to the kitchen for the promised snacks, he stood up slowly and stretched. His wife came over to him, brushing invisible lint off of his shirt as he settled his arms around her. He kissed her forehead before hugging her closely, "Happily ever after indeed."
