In light of the recent oil spill I found this interesting: The Economic Impact of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. For some reason the news people keep relating the event to hurricane Katrina but, I think it's more like the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. While not Katrina, I will agree that this particular incident is a nail in the coffin for the Big Easy, and many tourist dependent areas around the Gulf. While I do believe it's fair to say that people that depended on these areas for their income will now have to move on and join the masses, the fundamental difference here(from what I see anyways) is that their misfortune is not of their own doing. Due to poor countermeasures from the Oil Company, and possibly decades of legal wrangling, BP will make off the same way Exxon did. The only difference this time, is that a company of that size may take a bigger hit due to public renewal of environment sensitivity, and corporate trends of 'going green'.

Yeah, I can't imagine the cities around the gulf ever being the same. I hope all of those businesses and private citizens get to have some sort of lawsuit against BP.

Addendum. I will also add that this simply doesn't make the hurricane prone Gulf safe. I mean, oily hurricane water?
