Um, no, I think a country should be at least a thousand years old before it's allowed any alcohol!
Otherwise it tends to do irresponsible things like develop weapons of mass destruction, and then accuse other countries of having them when they haven't!
The drinking age here was 21 back when I was 18. But it was lowered to 20 just in time for my 20th birthday, then dropped to 18 a year later. That was because of the Vietnam War. People were complaining that young men were considered old enough to get themselves killed, but not old enough to drink a beer in a pub. I managed to get away with under-age drinking, but it could have been that I had an older boyfriend.

Statistically, it lowered drunk driving accidents among 18-20 year olds.
Unfortunately, it has increased binge drinking on college campuses.
We never made a big deal about drinking with our boys, we made a big deal about driving and drinking.
Personally, I think if you can serve in the military at 18 you should be able to buy a drink. jmo.
