Church's first birthday comes and goes with little fanfare. Wilson, of course, feels incredibly guilty about this, despite House's scoffing.
"He doesn't know his birthday from any other day," he says; and also, "You're getting upset over nothing. He'll enjoy his cake and ice cream no matter which day he gets it."
That does nothing to help Wilson's guilt or his mood. There are times when he thinks seriously about quitting his job; or, at the very least, stepping down as department head. His mind will sometimes wander the path of heading the department only, sending his patients to various colleagues, but he knows he'll never do it. Without patients, what use is there in being a doctor?
They decide to hold his birthday party on a Sunday, giving everyone's parents a chance to come and visit. This is a great plan, until House's parents have a flat on the way, and can't make it. Wilson's parents call shortly after, complaining of food poisoning from a deli that House had recommended. Cuddy gets caught up in a hospital snafu, and her parents are still too unsure of House and Wilson to come on their own.
"Sorry, kiddo," Wilson says sadly, bouncing the golden boy on his knee. The baby giggles, stuffing a fistful of birthday cake into his mouth.
House snaps a picture, shaking his head at Wilson. "He doesn't care. He has cake, he has Mom, he has presents." He leans over, chucking his offspring under the chin. More giggles, and the other fist disappears into his cake.
"Not his Mom," comes the inevitable reply, but there is a smile on his lips. "I feel like he's being cheated. I wanted everything to be perfect. He deserves that."
"Hate to be the one to say it, but it doesn't get much more perfect than this."
