The air was cold for April, but Rob sat outside on the roof anyway, his light jacket wrapped around his frame. Downstairs he knew he would be greeted by hectic workers, scrambling around like chickens without their heads. Not even lunch was quiet; all the time, minute after minute…
He just needed some quiet time to himself.
He stood up, moving toward the edge of the building. Down below, people walked the streets idly, cars zooming past on the roads. A typical, normal day in the city.
He didn’t hear the door slide open, nor did he hear the footsteps until he was grabbed from behind. Rob let out a surprised gasp as he suddenly was dragged backwards, then thrown to the ground. Had he been ready for it, he likely would have been able to stop the attack.
He obviously hadn’t been.
“Are you crazy?!”
Surprisingly, the voice was not Rob’s, but the attacker. Rob flipped onto his back, ready to kick whoever it was in the stomach. He stopped mid-motion when he realized exactly who was standing over him.
“Hey. You’re-“
And then Rob’s mind went blank. He knew the strange, spectacled, panting man from somewhere, but he wasn’t sure exactly where.
“Were you trying to jump or something?!”
At that, Rob finally understood what was going on. He sat up, rubbing the back of his head. “No! I was just looking down! You almost gave me a fucking heart attack!”
“Well you shouldn’t have been hanging around at the edge of the ledge,” the man shot back, folding his arms across his chest.
“I didn’t know it was a crime to do so,” he mumbled, slowly standing, brushing his suit off. “Who the hell are you, anyway?”
“Ed. Ed Helms. I’m a new correspondent.”
It was only then it hit Rob where he had seen him; he had been one of the people trying out for the positions that opened up. He didn’t know someone else was hired besides him.
“Rob Corrddy,” he replied finally, still brushing off his suit. Ed moved to the side of him, brushing his back off. “…Thanks.”
“What the fuck are you doing up here, anyway?” Ed sighed, rubbing his temples.
“I could ask you the same thing, you know.”
“I just needed to get…”
“…away from the chaos?” Rob guessed. Ed nodded, grinning a bit. “Yeah, me too. I don’t know if I can handle all this.”
He sat down on the ground. Ed followed suit, letting his legs rest out in front of him. “Sure you can.”
“I’m glad for the blind faith,” Rob joked, shaking his head.
“Thing is, Jon wouldn’t have hired either of us if he didn’t think we could do it, right? We just need to get into the swing of things.”
Rob smiled a bit. “Yeah, you’re right. Just feel like complaining.”
“I hear you,” Ed nodded empathetically. “…I think we should head back down.”
“You never told me why you came up here,” Rob reminded.
He scratched the back of his neck, shrugging. “I saw you come up. I got curious.”
“So you were following me.”
“Following is such a…strong word,” he chuckles, shrugging a bit. “Walk you down?”
“Sure,” Rob answered, standing. He extended his arm, helping Ed stand as well. For a moment, they stared at each other before Ed finally turned, scratching the back of his head.
“Us newbies will stick together,” he declared as he marched toward the door. “We’ll keep each other afloat, if you want.”
Rob smiled, following suit. “…Sounds like a plan to me.”
