On reading outside my comfort zone

It is so easy to read things that I have fostered an interest in.  For me, it used to be novels, then when college came along, I really got into reading non-fiction, mostly on different religions, psychology, and later on, also on education/learning, travel memoirs, cooking memoirs, and just memoirs in general ( Read more... )

I've been trying to do the same (kind of).

I've been trying to getback into reading novels and poetry for a really long time now. Every time I read a novel, I like it, but it's always another thing to push myself to start another. It's not the thing that immediately catches my attention.

Though it mainly focuses on politics and economics, Book Forum has a somewhat eclectic mix of subjects.

They have book reviews, which are OK, but I especially like the "Omnivore" section. Again, it's mostly social science topics, but I like how they group postings according to a topic or theme.

New York Review of Books also has a great mix of things (and they have a blog that's updated fairly regularly)

Olivia Judson had a wonderful biological sciences/ natural history blog that I liked, but she's no longer bloggingReply

Thanks for your recommendations! :-)

A friend of mine just highly recommended a book for me and others to read, called Stones into Schools by Greg Mortenson (same author of Three Cups of Tea), neither of which I have read yet.

I am aiming to finish Three Cups of Tea by Sept, because I am planning to attend his talk in the bay area at that time.

Have you read that book before? If so, what do you think about it? The reviews have generally been very good, so now i am very curious to read it too.

I hadn't heard of him or that book, but just looked it up and it sounds really inspiring. Let me know how it is ( ... )
