Having always been a firm believer in Wenger I shall not depart from my long held faith in his ability to manage a football club. What the last ten minutes spent trawling through the sports pages has made me want to do, however, is make a frank assessment of the situation right now. I'll start with the news that got me wanting to write

admirable maths going on there but i'm afraid we'll need more than 3 defenders to be the best in the prem. let's just take man utd as the benchmark. comparing defenders we have:

vermaelen, sagna, koscielny, djourou, gibbs, traore, eboue, jenkinson

versus

vidic, ferdinand, evra, rafael, fabio, smalling, jones, evans

oh i forgot squillaci. see? see how we need more than 3 defenders?!?!

very crude approximations, but if we bite the bullet

verm < or = vidic, but > avg prem quality
sagna > avg prem quality > rafael
kos, djourou as second stringers = smalling, evans
gibbs as a poor full back = fabio

squll, traore, jenkinson are non players ( < rosicky who is a 0.5 player)

eboue is zaoliaoing, despite my belief that hes a better rb than either rafael or fabio

which leaves us lacking a rio, an evra, a phil jones -> CB, LB, CB.

if we sign 2 out of cahill, samba, jagielka we have 2 players whos average skill would be very similar to the avg skill of jones or rio (rio obviously will be the best of the lot)

what is really poor is that no ones been thrown up as a possible LB candidate. we seriously need an LB. gibbs wasnt good enough to displace a g-clich who was just about the worst LB in the prem last season.
