Using her feet to kick herself away from the tree, Tara swung from the tire swing, her sun lightened hair flowing with the breeze behind her. There was a noise out towards the house and she could see her brother and father loading up the truck for another one of their weekends.

She couldn’t help but grin; that always meant that it would be just her and her mother for the weekend. Those were the best times, they always meant magic.

There was a loud shot as they drove away causing Tara to stop, her heart pounding hard in her throat as she glanced at the bark. She noticed the mark where the bark was missing and realized that her brother shot his BB gun at her, again.

She refused to cry or get upset even though she could still hear his laughter as they drove away; she was used to Donnie being mean to her like that by now. He was her older brother and from what she knew they were supposed to be mean to their younger sisters…but there was more to him. Her mother taught her never to hate but she couldn’t help but feel some ill will towards her brother. She wished he’d go away to college or something…then again that would leave her father to have more time for her…maybe it was good that Donnie was around.

The moment Tara couldn’t hear the engine to the truck anymore she slid down the edge of the tire and started running towards the house. Slowing her pace as she got to the steps she stopped to pet one of the outdoor cats as he perched on the edge of the windowsill by the door.

“Mamma?” She pulled the door to the kitchen open, hearing the sound of wood hitting wood as it slammed shut behind her. “What are you doin’?” Slipping off her shoes she stepped on the support rung at the bottom of the stool, climbing up and sitting on her knees as she looked up curiously at her mother.

“Hey sweetie,” she whispered, leaning in and kissing her nine year old daughters forehead. Sarah turned back, humming softly as she started to zest the peal of the orange in her hand. “Making a candle.” Tara tipped her head curiously and pointed to the orange. “I’m gonna use the color from the peal to dye the wax.” She spoke before her daughter had a chance to.

“Oh…” Tara murmured, shifting on the stool and sitting down to swing her legs as she quietly watched her mother. “Can I help?” She knew the answer would be no, her mother always told her that she was too young; but she still asked anyway.

“Sure honey,” Sarah said, setting the orange down and picking up her daughter to the stool in front of the wax. “I think that you should help make your birthday candles anyway.” She smiled. “After all you are going to be ten next week.”

Tara smiled; she’d actually forgotten that her birthday was on Tuesday. “Why orange mamma?” she asked, pulling her long blonde hair back and away from her face before she took the rope from her mother and dipped the ends in the wax like she’d seen her mother do so many times before.

Leaning in her mother smiled. “Well, Wicca’s believe that orange is the symbol for attraction, empathy and the ability to adapt. That’s just some of the things a mother would want for her daughter. That’s what I want for you; only the good things in life.” Sarah moved behind Tara and started to show her how to dip the string into the wax, watching as it started to form a thin stick. “See how the orange starts to show as the wax dries?”

She nodded and grinned, turning back to look at her mother. “How long do we have?” Tara didn’t have to finish what she was asking, they both just knew.

“A week.” She wrapped her arms around her daughter and rested her head on her shoulder. “I’ll make a cake for your birthday and I have a present for you.” Tara’s eyes lit up and she kissed her mothers cheek. “Gonna have to wait a week to see it.”

“It’s ok mamma. I like when it’s just us. Can we have more lessons?” Her mother just nodded, knowing that there would never be enough time to show her everything she needed to know about magic; but she was going to try.
