I can see why people would lie on their benefits applications, even the recertification applications. I remember when I was trying to get health insurance around the time Onamacare became a thing, a social worker asked if I had kids and when I said no, she laughed and was like "you should consider it". I didn't find that funny. You're really going to tell a young, single, black woman to become a statistic to get benefits? She laughed again and said she was just joking. 14 years later, I'm seeing that maybe she was right.
Before I lost my job, I planned on getting a tattoo. I had no idea what it was going to be, though...probably a small 42, but now I want to search for Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy tattoos to see what others have gotten and if it can give me some inspiration.
It's crazy how hard things are out there. I work for the dept. in NZ that pays out benefits to the unemployed (not what I actually do but I see how much they get paid and their costs etc quite often), and while it's probably easier to get them here than in the USA, it's still tough. I wish you luck with your appeal, and with getting work that you can manage around your study. I have a student daughter and an unemployed son in their 20s, so I see how hard dealing with job hunting, studying, and the lack of money is.
I hope the hairloss doesn't get any worse, and that it gets better soon.
I'm not sure turning 42 has any answers, but the Hitchhikers Guide certainly holds a lot of truisms! It's one of my favourites, and 'Don't Panic!' is probably the best thought!

I hope you are able to get the assistance you need and able to finish school.
I don't know that I learned I was the answer to life, the universe, and everything when I was 42, but I did get an awesome tattoo!
