Severus clutched the paper Valentine he had spent several hours meticulously cutting. As he stood in front of Professor Potter’s door fear washed over him, and he suddenly felt foolish in thinking Harry would accept such a dated and childish notion. Before he could turn away however, the door opened and he found himself basking in Harry’s warm smile.
“Severus I was just about to come see you.”
Before Harry could say another word, Severus thrust the paper heart into his hands and quickly turned on his heel stalking away, not waiting to hear the ridicule he knew was coming.

“Severus, wait!”
Severus slowed his pace as he heard the younger professor giving chase. What had possessed him to give the object of his unrequited desire such a ridiculous gesture anyway? Realising he would have to face the consequences of his actions sooner or later; he steeled his heart and turned just as Harry caught up to him. Before he could fashion any kind of scathing defense however, Harry reached into his robes and pulled something out. With a shy smile, he handed it to Severus.
“You left before I could give this to you.”
It was a paper heart.

Severus stared down at the homemade Valentine in his hands. It was not intricately cut like Severus’ but was lopsided, brightly coloured and exclaimed in Harry’s messy handwriting,‘Be Mine.’
It was perfect.
Severus looked up to see Harry caressing the Valentine he’d made as if it were fragile glass, his fingers reverently tracing over the word ‘Yours’ that was written across in his spidery scrawl.
Green met black, and Severus’ real heart skipped a beat at the promise he saw in them. Perhaps this had not been such a foolish idea after all.
“Happy Valentine’s Severus.”
“Happy Valentine’s Harry.”
