» History:
Ma’at doesn’t have a true story attached to her name, being more of a concept rather than a goddess. Still, she was central to the idea of universe, balance and divine order. She was order and harmony, being born as Ra rose from the waters of Nun, her counter-part, so to speak. It was her task to make sure Nun would never reclaim the Universe, keeping the World as the Gods had dictated. Ma’at represents the idea of fairness, of morality and justice. The weak and poor were hers to protect, the wicked to be punished. The idea behind her is not that things like politics and religion should alter the definition of justice. Justice was righteous, fair, equal whether you own gold or not. There is no perfection, just balance. The goddess was also responsible for the judging of souls when they died. Their heart was placed on a scale and judged against her feather. If the balance existed and the heart wasn’t heavier than the feather, they would be allowed to leave for eternal life. Otherwise, they would devoured by Ammnit.
All justice was ruled by Ma’at and the rulers, especially the Pharaohs, were supposed to be virtuous and uphold her ideals more than any other person in the Kingdom. They shouldn’t rule unless they ruled fairly, that was the most common idea.
» Reincarnations:
first incarnation; farmwoman somewhere in northern Asia, a little focused on living well rather than make sure everyone walked on the path of law and right. Married, had a butload of kids and enjoyed her time as a human as soon as she stopped freaking out over the fact that she was aging. That would get to a Goddess, sorry to say.
second incarnation; First life as a human in which she got to stomp her foot down and make sure people obeyed her. Little comfortable place in Africa, as - eventually - the elder of a small village. Didn’t marry but didn’t need it. It was complicated enough to rule over thirty or so people, never mind keep a husband in place.
third incarnation; born and raised in italian’s renaissance period to a small noble family, one which seemed to believe there was no reason for her to be kept aside merely because she was a woman. She learned and thrived, never remembering who she truly was but it didn’t seem to matter. Killed during an assault on her family, as she tried shielding her younger brothers.
current incarnation; Following the tradition of his family, Esther had the pleasure of being thrown into the world with a vast amount of relatives already living and breathing. More than that, she was born into an already well formed household, members fighting over each other to welcome the new baby. It was a good way to enter the world and, during his childhood, Esther learned to enjoy it. She was the youngest, the calmest and most sincere, which wasn’t really saying anything when next to her boisterous and overly loud brothers.
Nothing seemed to break this happiness much except for a small detail. As she started to grow up, his mother started to compare him a little bit too much with her brothers. It was subtle at first, very subtle. But after a while, it became so obvious that the three boys took their time to distract their mother, try to get Esther out of the range of fire when she got going. It helped but didn’t quite work out. Soon enough, the girl was standing up for himself maybe a little too impolitely. But she honestly didn’t see why she would always think he did less, he was less, he seemed off. It didn’t come as a surprise for him to leave the house as soon as possible. It wasn’t that she disliked his family. Esther just thought that he should live his life in no one’s shadow and her mother seemed inclined to keep her in that place.
Her brothers tried to make her stay, her sister tried to. After all, they were five and without one, it seemed like the circle wasn’t complete. She didn’t listen much. Accepting all their reasoning, Esther did exactly as she had planned. First she moved to her godfather’s house, allowing the slightly less than sane man to pretend to look after her. During this time, she continued studying, worked part time and did the best she could. Never accepting help from any because it was like she had to prove herself to that woman.
Always a top student - not because of some inherent genius but merely because of hard work - she graduated college early and kept going. Slowly, she build his life away from that initial shadow, allowing her siblings to barge in her life simply because they could at any given time. Because she adored them.
Scholarly wise, she graduated with a major in criminal justice and a minor in Law Enforcement Administration, enough to give her a sound base for the future. It was weird for her to notice how easily this kind of subject was memorized and understood. She found herself often commenting to the TV, shaking her head at some people's opinions because they didn't sound right. It was almost arrogant of the woman but it truly felt right. a Juris Doctor followed, straight out of college. This preceded a three years as a criminal lawyer.
During this time, she met Philip. He was… well, a perfect complement to her. Full of life, pushing her to try out new things or those which she didn’t like much. She fell in love with that and, in his own way, she really loved him. She tried hard, even changing small details about herself that she thought he disliked - that he said he disliked. It didn’t matter because it was for him. All warnings of those around her, she disregarded. After all, Esther had always been stupidly headstrong.
They married after five years of dating. And maybe, oh just maybe, she should have listened to those warnings against him. Esther had thought everything was fine. She had a good home, a good husband and a baby on the way. However, when the baby was born, things began to shake. Her husband began to stay outside doors more often, leave tasks to her, spend nights out. The math was simple and Esther could do it easily. Maybe it was this climate of suspicion which reminded her of who she was. It was as Ma’at that she kicked him out of her home, her baby in her arms and leaving his lover to deal with the person her husband had become.
It didn’t take that long to file for a divorce even though she did allow him to give the kid his name. Because her son needed a father and she wouldn’t deny him that. Esther effectively kept her husband out of her life since then. She rebuilt everything and worked even harder at her job. Of course, Fate was nice and once again thought he needed a new distraction in his life. This time it was her sister, suddenly barging in his house with a kid on her arms. Esther opened her house for both sister and nephew and took to them as if it was the small family she had failed to build with Philip. It seemed okay to her. It seemed enough.
She has recently left her hometown of LA with her child and sister, taking up a new position as Superior Court Judge in New York. It's still fairly new and she's still trying not to freak out over the implications but A) job's good B) pay's good and C) if a goddess of justice can't do it, there's something incredibly wrong with this.
» Personality:
The first thing to notice about Esther is that she is mostly smiling. She likes living, she enjoys showing it and anyone will be able to see it even after a short time around her. There are bad things, odd she had faced and will have to face in the future but that doesn’t stop her from enjoying yourself with each and every task. Which leads to the fact that she searches for which she enjoys the most to do. Once she was forced into tasks which did little but annoy her. Now, she chooses her own path and makes sure to do the best she can, all she can do. It’s a childish way to live and most will not understand her. But still, she pursues all her interests, one by one until they bear fruit. By the way, she’s also damned good in what she does, thank you.
Ma’at believes in the concept of fairness. She will likely forgive a murderer who acted to protect another than she would a thief who has more than enough to go around. It’s all a matter of who the person is and their intent rather than the act itself. This allows her to remain a cool head when necessary. Stable and confident, probably even more because she forces herself to be so. Her friends are hardly the most stable people around and she wants to make sure she can help them. Even if that can only be done by kicking them into shape when the time is right. There’s also the other side of the medal. They have also become her strength and she’s conscious that she can push herself further and farther as long as one of them is around her.
Esther has truly no mind-mouth filter and she doesn’t care about that. She doesn’t like pretenses, she dislikes people who hide behind falsities and prefers much more to be bluntly honest, even if it might hurt others. In the long run, honesty is always better and lies have short legs, go really nowhere. The woman would rather have someone come up to her and say she’s a bitch to her face than having someone flattering their way into her surroundings.
And picking up that detail, it’s not like she is a bitch. It’s just that her bluntness usually doesn’t gather her allies and her attitude in a courthouse might be slightly on the strict side. It’s her way of being and her way of living. In general, she is a gentle, nonsensical woman who enjoys laughing out loud when someone amuses her and would run over anyone who dared scratching a nail on someone she adores, legally or physically. As Ma’at is the personification of law and order, it does mean she follows a certain pattern in her life. Slightly OCD at work, yes, and a little too organized when she’s distracted. Nevertheless she tries not to follow the same routine for long and enjoys watching the chaos that other people do of their own lives.
Though she might drop by a friend’s to tidy up their cushions. Oops.
Esther is a happy person, little more to that. Money, possessions, those things matter little to her. If she can have a roof over her head and annoying people knocking at her door - or her door down - she will consider herself content. Added note. Artistic side is something she doesn’t have. Don’t ask her to draw beyond stick figures, expect broken instruments and never ever make her sing because that person (and its ears) will suffer till the rest of eternity.

Clean up living room; done. Take care of notes for tomorrow; done. Nanny for Robert; also done. Can’t forget to call the prosecutor and get the blood work done before I forget again. There’s something else I’m forgetting, has to be. Gods, what?
... ah. Well, if he calls again, I’ll just force myself to forget. Again.
» Sample Roleplay:
It was when the engine underneath her stopped that Esther allowed herself to truly assimilate her surroundings. The streets were loud, busy as in most days of the week. Countless people walking back and forth, paying little attention to anything bar their own lives, their own purposes. Caring little about others’ problems or anything out of their own circle of influence. She was not included, of course, ignored as effectively as one would ignore a discarded object on the roads. Strangely enough, the thought made her smile.
Silently, the girl allowed the faint smile to take over, allowed her eyes to stray back and forth through the familiar streets before finally leaving the machine which had brought her home. Home. Perhaps that was the reason for her rather rare introspective mood. New York was her place now. While Los Angeles would always have a dear place in her heart, the place where she had grown and lived until independent, it just wasn’t the same. Just as she had changed since leaving, the city didn’t feel the same to her adult mind. No, even with her constant motions, the odd wishes to change from her parent’s house to her own, her husband’s and back. New York had become more important.
If not for her parents, Esther would have never returned to LA. Definitely not in the conditions she had left, trying to forget Philip and his wayward ways. It was over though. Over and done with, something she would never regret.
Without rushing, she placed her helmet inside the motorbike, locking it securely before gathering books and handbag together. Her boss hadn’t been exactly pleased with the last months’ constant disappearance acts and little explanations would be enough for him. Work still needed to be done and, unlike her colleagues, she would have less time to do so. Shaking her head lightly, a mental list of tasks to be done pushed aside briskly, Esther made her way inside. Bar gossiping neighbors, none saw fit to bother her and even less to stop her. Considering the ability those women had to memorize everything which happened in the fifty or so blocks around, she doubted anyone in said blocks didn’t know she had practically moved in. Joys of having little to do, of course.
"Have a nice day, Miss Esther."
And, of course, it would be far too much to expect them to memorize her name correctly. Attempting a slight smile, Esther waited for the woman to disappear down the hall before walking towards the apartment and actually bothering to look for her key, opening the door slowly. "I’m back."
The soft call of a little boy running from his nanny made everything better.
