how a doctorate student who has already been through all the knocks of graduate school managed to sign up for a class at the same time that she teaches one is beyond me, and also not my problem. why a prof of said class is trying to alter everyone else's schedule to accommodate this said student is also not my issue! there is a reason we sign up ( Read more... )

I agree with the above comment. Though, to go for a less confrontational and possibly more effective approach, maybe gather together a few other students from the class (there's strength in numbers) and go to the prof's office hours to say that a change in the class time would affect many other people besides the one doctoral student, and would cause much more inconvenience. Also, maybe look up U of A's policy on meetings outside regularly scheduled class times (they must have one for extenuating circumstances like extra tutorial sessions near the end of term, but this sounds like it would fall under the same category since your prof is proposing that the class meet outside the 'official' time listed in the course catalogue). Usually it would say something along the lines of 'students cannot be forced to attend and cannot be penalized for not attending,' precisely because the university recognizes students have other commitments besides that one class.
