Wow. Okay, so I've been pretty much staying away from news about what this show was going to be about, so it was a surprise to me when "Children of Mars" went for "Picard quit Starfleet because a bunch of androids bombed Mars" which apparently happened at Ye Olde TOS/AOS Divergence Point of the Romulan supernova and he was off rescuing Romulans (two of them hang out at his vineyard now) and apparently the Federation bans having androids now, which I guess is one more thing we can add to their Weird Bans list. (See also: genetic engineering.) And then he quit Starfleet because he was mad at Starfleet for not doing enough to help, I guess. Plus maybe he misses Data? Who knows.
Man, I didn't even remember Data was dead. I think I basically blocked out the entirety of the TNG movies.
So this episode turns out to be about a young woman named Dahj, who turns out to be an android, who comes to Picard for help because she's being pursued by Romulans, and Picard eventually recognized her in a portrait Data painted. Eventually the Romulans kill her -- I assume the show will explain why the Romulans wanted to -- and Picard goes to the Daystrom Institute, which is one of those names that is vaguely familiar but I haven't brushed up on my Trek enough, to ask how they could make androids that look like flesh and blood humans. And he's told that they can't, because they would need a copy of Data's brain and Data's dead, but if they could they would be twins.
Then of course we cut to the twin, who does not seem to know she is an android, and who is hanging out with Romulans at the Romulan "reclamation site" and as we pull back and back in the final shot we see what they're actually all in is a half-built Borg cube. Yikes.
So that's about EIGHT DIFFERENT THINGS that I never expected to come up in this episode and I am excited for more but that is mostly because I am extremely weak for Romulans even if I know, rationally, that the version of them that are the Rihannsu will never become canon. But... Romulans! It looks like this show will give me all the Romulans I could ever want! Right in the id! Thank you, canon.
Anyway. I'd say that you all should be watching this but you all probably watched it three weeks ago.
The dog, unfortunately, did not like this episode because it featured a dog barking.
