Save Miku Wikia

Feb 17, 2012 14:44

A quick heads-up post: if you're a little lost on what exactly is going down on Youtube and what can be done to help, the Save Miku Wikia is probably the best source to use, being both a lot more cool-headed than any given Youtube comment you'd care to name what with their focus on information-gathering rather than finger-pointing, and being ( Read more... )

I think the main point of contention is that, with all these potentially fake names getting thrown around on some of the videos, there doesn't seem to be sufficient protection in place to make sure that Guy A from ELECTROCUTICA is actually Guy A from ELECTROCUTICA and not just someone random who looked up the website. There's little-to-no reporting on that front on Google's end, so the timing is a little fishy - hence trying to contact them direct to ask.

Thanks, I guess :)

As for the commenters, I hear some Japanese ones are worse - with all the Korea-hate. But I'm right there with a big Banhammer if anything bad starts to happen. For now, all bad stuff we had was one attempt at vandalism from a Massachusets IP.

There are some native speakers on the Wikia already. Things are going slowly but it is getting interesting.

Yours, "Saruta", the admin of that Wikia.

Ahah, sorry if I sound too unenthused! The irreverent tone really isn't meant seriously at all, and is pretty much my own way of trying to be measured and careful - there's a fair amount of misinformation flying around Youtube and you never know when someone's going to try to overwrite a Wiki with a bunch of rubbish. Future-proofing the link, I guess.

It's great to hear that there hasn't been much in the way of trouble, and I definitely am glad to hear that it's being solidly policed. Has there been a downtick in the number of videos getting hit now that Youtube's (presumably) aware of it and (hopefully) trying to verify things a bit more carefully?

I am not aware of any response by YouTube. Moreover, as I understand YouTube is *unabel* to change things as something called DMCA requires it to remove stuff after a takedown notice within "a reasonable period", determined by courts as 24h. With their volume, it's not possible to investigate every clain in 24h, I guess.

However, the attacks on Western translations seem to have cease - or at least I know of no new ones.

HOWEVER, we have evidence of what may have been a copycat attack, this time on a Japanese-only account.

A long-term task is to work out a way that Western sharing, including translations, could happen with some kind of permission. But this is indeed long term (though there seem to be existing blanket permissions from *some* authors).

Yeah, this is the major problem with DMCA provisions that's really bled through to stuff like SOPA / PIPA - you've got to take the claimant at their word at first, and by then it's usually too much trouble to come back to it later. It's good to hear the attacks have largely stopped, though.

I think this could happen a lot easier now that Crypton have started an official Miku Youtube channel. Crypton / KarenT must already be talking to producers to get their videos up on the english channel - it'd only be a few steps from there to ask their permission on translations, and then recruit some of the bigger fansub names to help out.
